3D is FUN.

The DeliveryThis class is dedicated to the other side of multimedia; 3D, visual effects (VFX), motion graphics, video-post and audio. We also explore making web animations in the latter half of the year. The emphasis is on quite specific software skills development.

What are we going to make?It varies. Our delivery is “agile”. Last year we looked at working with Diploma Screen students to provide artwork for post-production (Tas Grid Iron).

This year we’ll do something different again.

The DeliveryThis module comprises three units for assessment; 3D Modelling, 3D Animation and Digital Visual Effects.

I know nothing about 3D is this something to worry about? No, we start with learning the basics of modelling, texturing and lighting. With that understanding we can then look at animation, particle systems, dynamics and other fun stuff. We start assuming you know very little about 3D.

It’s likely you’ll need to practice after hours. The software we use needs constant useto remember “what’s going on”.

3D ModuleThe field of 3D modelling and animation is vast and expanding all the time. Here’s a brief list of existing and emerging application of 3D :

• 3D Printing• 3D Gaming (UDK, Unity, CryEngine ) • CGI (computer generated imagery) for broadcast / TV O:\PostYear10\Alanvale\

Students\IDM\chrisadams\3d\idents• 3D artwork / Illustration / Promotion / Signage• CAD/ CAM, CNC, composite construction• Automotive Design Viz, production/ Aerospace Design Viz, production engineering• Architectural Viz• Simulations (transport systems, thermodynamics, Finite Element Analysis)• Content for Augmented Reality / VR • 3D Stereoscopic environments (broadcast, VR)

3DSMax3DSMax 2014 64-bit. We use 3DSMax here at Tas TAFE due to its cross-platform efficiencies, its extensive online support (resources, tutorials, forums) and its reliability. You can download a student version for free !You can get a free license to use at home. You just need to register with Autodesk and then download a multi-Ggb installer (4-9GgB approx.).

3DSMax | Free Student Edition | 3yr license

You also need a PC “strong” enough to run it.See system specs here.

StartWhere do we start ?We start off with an “icebreaker | getting to know you” task; “Four Letter Word”; see the handout. We then look at exploring the 3DSMax interface with a series of short tutorials.

We start at the very beginning assuming you know nothing. You learn from tutorials designed to build your modelling skills, specifically low poly modelling They’re a mix of videos and text tutorials.

Where do we Finish?By the end of delivery you should have a fundamental understanding of low-poly modelling, basic animation, lighting, texturing, production flow and particle systems.

What’s Next? You’ve stayed awake through this Powerpoint, here’s something else to go on with today:

1. Watch the Tech Demo for a real-world advert production using 3DSMax (20mins)

2. Four-Letter Word (due two weeks)3. Research Task (due today)4. Start the first of a sequence of compiled 3DSMax Tutorial Videos
