Defining Slope

• When building a roof, carpenters must figure out the pitch, or slope of the roof.

• A 1:10 pitch means that for every inch raised, the roof extends 10 inches.

30 inches

What’s the slope of the hill?

• If a hiker rises 200 feet in elevation every mile, what is the average slope of the mountain?

Graphs have slopes.

To tell the slope of a line, we

need to know how high it rises

or sinks and how far it

moves left or right.

• Use• Solve for y using the

x-values to the left.• Then graph the linear

equation

Slope as an equation.

• How high the slope rises or sinks is called the rise.

• How far the slope moves left or right is called the run.

• IMPORTANT!

Page 7: 5 2slope

1) Find two points on the line.

2) How high does it rise?

3) How far right does it run?

4) Put the numbers into a ratio, or fraction.

Let’s find the slope of this line.
