Hurricane Katrina was the most destructive and the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.
At least 1,836 people lost their lives and the cost was estimated to be over $80 billion.

Devastating catastrophic disasters such as Hurricane Katrina made clear the importance of communication and information related to disaster preparedness.
Mississippi’s high poverty rate (about 20%) indicates need for greater disaster literacy among state’s most vulnerable populations.

Create household disaster plan
Prepare first aid kits for home and each vehicle
Create emergency supply kit or grab-and-go bag
Keep important papers in fire-resistant carrying case to bring with you in case of an emergency
Create a roadside emergency kit for each automobile.

Is Your Family Prepared for the Next Disaster?
1. Decide on 2 places to meet (near home & outside neighborhood) in case of emergency
2. Pick 2 out-of-town contacts for family to contact in case you become separated
3. Prepare checklist of important phone numbers, addresses, contacts
4. Develop “shelter in place” strategy when evacuation is not an option

5. Prepare, practice evacuation strategy for different types of disasters
6. Train all able-bodied family members in CPR, fire extinguishers, common first-aid procedures
7. Ensure yard is prepared by trimming branches, replacing gravel or rocks with light-weight mulch, checking for fire hazards
8. Purchase battery-operated radio or NOAA weather radio.
