Fact File….• Name: Donald Knuth

• Surname is pronounced - Ka-NOOTH.

• Born 10th January 1983 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.

• His Father was Ervin Henry Knuth

• His Mother was Louise Marie Bohning

• Donald attended Lutheran School’s as a child

• As a child Donald gained a love for education, music and mathematics.

• With age Donald’s main two loves were the organ and investigating sentence structure.

Humble beginnings….• In secondary School Donald won a

conundrum competition; the task was to find as many words out of the word – ‘Ziegler’s Giant Bar’

• He found 4500 words – whilst pretending he was too ill to attend school

• The judges only had 2500 words on their master list.

• He a played the Saxophone and tuba in secondary school – his main interests were music and maths.

• He gained a scholarship to Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, Ohio in 1956 to study Physics

Donald moved away from Physics and into Mathematics

He graduated with his B.S. in June 1960 with distinction

College also awarded him a Master's Degree.

He was also awarded 2 fellowships (Woodrow and Wilson)
