‘a great field was to be opened up in the line of opening up’Ronan CrowleyDr Cleo HanawayPat LockleyDr Elizabeth Switaj
Cleo is a Joyce geek who knows pretty-much noting about computers! She recently completed her doctorate in English Literature at University of Oxford. Her thesis was entitled 'see ourselves as others see us': A Phenomenological Study of James Joyce's Ulysses and Early Cinema.
She is currently Cultural Engagement Officer for an AHRC-funded collaboration between the Berkshire Record Office and the Department of English at the University of Reading, titled Enemies of the State: The Easter Rising and Irish Detainees in Reading Prison (http://blogs.reading.ac.uk/enemies-of-the-state/).
Pat is a computer geek who knows pretty much nothing about Joyce!
Pat has done nothing with his life
So how did OpenJoyce start?
Cleo is always OPEN to chatting about Joyce.
Pat is always OPEN to chatting (full stop!).
Cleo is always OPEN to finding new ways of thinking about literature.
Pat is always OPEN to discovering new things to find patterns in……..
So we made some visualisations in the
vague hope of finding something…. And then
the visualisations went to Dublin
….And so the we met Ronan who has lots of Ulysses drafts and is interested in changes
between and the books Joyce borrowed from… And he
needed some tools…. So some tools got built…..
….Then Pat did a MOOC and met Elizabeth, who wanted to
run a MOOC on Joyce…..
So it sort of seemed logical to explicitly take a static resource (the visualisations, the tools, the sort of community) and
make it dynamic
Dynamic? ….. Not Open?
117 Words in Latin have some
meaning of “Open”
What does Open mean to you?
It's a buzz word to associate education with equal opportunity. It's a
business angle.
Open to access by the greater majority, as in not strictly limited by specific finance,
resource, circumstance, or entry criteria .
An attitude where the naturally reflexive response is to share w.o
friction not only materials created, but ideas and communications,a dedication to making use of and promoting the use of like things.
If it is open it should be freely available to anyone to access and read at minimum, and ideally as soon as created........Preferably no barriers such as log-ins, and certainly no barriers based on elite memberships. Should have rights of re-use where possible. Not everything can be open - or cannot be open immediately. Means of access and discoverability should be open and uncomplicated. Openness should be cumulative, a culture of using open information and contributing open information, whether a substantial piece of research, or comments and discussions about it.
DON’T PANIC
What does Open
mean?
Free to accessEasy to accessFree to re-useEasy to re-useEasily discoverable (possibly helped through publicity, google placing, etc.)
Reciprocity (between creator and user)
Post licence worldNo restrictions full stopCollaborativeThere is no point at which open starts, and no point at which it stops
No preferred licence – happy to discussAll source code availableSharing over multiple sitesAcceptance of the vagueness of “open”Having fun with the vagueness of “open”Didactic Openess
What do we lose from
Open?
The idea of having sole intellectual owner ship of an idea or tool
Academic credibility/status (academic job market still requires applicants to have traditionally (sole-authored in the Humanities) monographs and journal articles, even though ‘impact’ is 20% of the REF)
Open means I will work for free
Open means I can take on board any suggestions
Open work isn’t valued
Open still needs explaining
Who wants to work for free?Who wants to give away copyright?Didactic bartering of copyright and time?
What do we gain from
Open?
KnowledgeLearning toolsEmpowerment (everyone’s say is worth something)
New relationships (e.g. between Joyce scholars, IT experts, Joyce readers, Joyce-inspired artists)
New perspectives (especially when ideas and tools are re-mixed and re-used)
‘Impact’ – REF points (translates as money for universities)
A warm feeling?
Better skills?
Lack of common currency?
No preferred licence – happy to discussAll source code availableSharing over multiple sitesAcceptance of the vagueness of “open”Having fun with the vagueness of “open”No commodity dumping
What do we want from
Open?
Free to accessEasy to accessFree to re-useEasy to re-useEasily discoverable (possibly helped through publicity, google placing, etc.)
Reciprocity (between creator and user)
The chance to reach people without barriers
The chance to break out of controlled areas
“Good scale”
No affiliationsNo partnershipsNo control (so to speak)Already have one MOOCowTwo more MOOCows comingPossible funding
How can we be open about project ownership?
Language is important
“Open”ly asking people to join
As many entry points as possible
No drop outs / hiring / redundancies
How can we be open to teaching anyone?
Make OpenJoyce as easy to use as possible
Make OpenJoyce easily discoverable (google placing and promotion through social media)
Make it clear that no prior knowledge of Joyce is necessary
How can we be open to any request?
Ensure that the website’s language is non-didactic and inviting
Make OpenJoyce as easy to use as possible
Make OpenJoyce easily discoverable
Make it clear that no prior knowledge of Joyce is necessary
Offer lots of easy-to-find methods for contacting us and other OpenJoyce ‘members’
Give equal visibility to each area/theme on the site
Accept it is work
How far can open go?
We don’t want to be open to spammers
We don’t want to be open to people who are merely intent on criticising others efforts and approaches to Joyce
