Basic Plan of a Roman City

● Roman civil engineers used a plan like this

● Two main streets at right

● Intersection right in the middle of the town.

● Both streets extend outside the town through four fortified gates.

What you need to do...

As a class you will create a colourful and detailed map of a Roman City. You will plan the city together.

You will form small groups to oversee each aspect of the city.

Page 12: A roman city

1) Create a group of students and choose an aspect of the city to

govern.

2) In your groups, elect a Senator to lead your group

Page 13: A roman city

3) In your group, research your facility. Think about...

● How many of it does the city need?● Where should they be placed for strategic

access?● Does it need to be near to another building?● How big should it be, for how many people?● Will it be inside or outside the forum?● What shape is the building?

Page 14: A roman city

4) Write down your group decisions about your plans. Give them to your Senator to present to the Emperor.

Page 15: A roman city

5) The Senators from each group have a meeting with the Emperor:

● For the Senators to present their requests and ideas for the city planning

● To compromise and organise the city plans● To draw a rough draft of the city in pencil, with

the Emperor leading.● To decide on a name for the Roman City

Page 16: A roman city

6) Once the rough draft is complete, every group member can begin to

sketch, draw, paint, and create their facility on the city plan
