Thoughts of the Forgotten
By: Aaron Huestis
Here I am. Still breathing, heart still beating.
For how much longer?
It’s cold outside.
We eat once a day.
My cloths are rags.
My hands are cracked
I can no longer stand straight.
The sirens don’t permitus to sleep.
Everyday death tormentsus in many forms.
Disease is everywhere.
Everyone is sick.
There is no sanitation.
We are imprisoned for crimes we don’t understand.
We are enslaved by our fellow countrymen.
I don’t know where my family is.
They know not of my whereabouts.
There is no contact with the outside.
What hatred prompts such savagery?
What crime deserves this punishment?
Everyday could be my last.
Death is common place.
No one will care.
And I will just be shoveledin with the others.
Afterwards, teachers canharness the anger and sadness
of the students to connect to the material.
The motivation to learnhas been created through
use of story.
