What’s Different between a Smartphone or Tablet and a LaptopThey are all computers

Laptops

• have persistent large Storage (hard drives) and small transient Memory (RAM)

• run the App in a window

• have a Desktop

• have a real keyboard

• can have viruses and malware

Tablets/Smartphones

• only have large persistent Memory

• run the App full screen

• have a Home screen … and Button!

• and an on-screen keyboard - although can use an external keyboard too.

• virtually free of any nasty stuff like viruses and malware

Why is persistent Memory important?

Laptops

• Start by loading all the apps and data they need from (persistent) Storage to (transient) Memory before they can be used (“booting”)

Tablets

• All Apps are installed in persistent Memory

• All Apps are ready to run all the time - after initial “boot”

You can run multiple Apps• To run an App just tap its icon

• To run another App press the Home key then tap the App for the next App

• Press the home key and tap the first icon and you are back in the first App

App Store• One of the issues with PC/Laptops are viruses and malware

• Since the iPhone, all tablet and phone manufacturers control what apps are installed by providing App Stores

• Apps that have to go through an inspection process before App is available

• App Store - Apple

• Google Play Store - Android

• Amazon App Store - Android

SmartPhones

iPhone

Android Phone

Android Phones

Android variants

• Amazon Fire

• Nook

• Argos

Blackberry PhonesOperating System

• QNX - obsolete

• BB10 - runs Android Apps from Amazon App Store

Windows Phones• Windows 8 style -

Tablets

iPads

Android Tablets

iPhone Operating System (IOS)

• Operating System is IOS

• It is standard across all Apple Phones and Tablets

• Is only available on Apple products

• Is tightly tied to the product

Android operating system• Owned by Google

• Open Source

• Is used on nearly all non-Apple devices, phones and tablets

• Can be (and IS) changed by the hardware manufacturer

• Is MUCH less consistent across all devices

Tablets have a Home Screen• When lost always return to

Home screen

• iPhone/iPad - click twice slowly on Home button

• Android - Touch Home icon

• To move Icons,

• press and hold the icon

• drag it to new position or even screen

Printing• If you have a AirPrint compatible printer no

problems

• If you don’t have an AirPrint printer then, if you have a computer and a printer at home you can use Google Cloud Print

• Google Cloud Print is more flexible as you can print to your printer wherever you are. iPhone/iPad needs an extra App, PrinterPro Central

The Rule!1. Click on App icon to run it

2. Press/Click/Touch Home button to choose another or to return to running App.

3. When all else fails REBOOT

• usually hold the power off button for 10 seconds
