SUMMARY
STANZA 1- The speaker says that he has met or has some knowledge of night when he was walked alone in rain.- He is walking into a part where there are no light.(…out walked the furthest city light)
STANZA 2- The speaker wants to let us to know that it not just an average dark and lonely night, but it darkest and loneliest. - He has walked by the watchman (policeman or security guard) on duty (…on his beat )
- The speaker looks down, avoiding the glance of the watchman (he doesn’t want to explain)
STANZA 3- The speaker stopped walking when he heard a distant sound of yelling, but he can’t quite make it out because it’s interrupted.- The speaker means by saying that the cry is far away- it's not even from somewhere on the same block, but form another street.
STANZA 4- The speaker says that the cry the he
heard wasn’t for him and he looks up to the sky.
- He is used to things like trying to tell what time it is by looking at the location of the moon in the sky.
*luminary : glowing, bright, someone who is really smart/ celestial (sun, stars and moon)
STANZA 5 (the couplet)- The speaker feels like, no matter
what time it is, it’s neither wrong nor right.
- He’s acquainted with the night, so he used to this dark, creepy loneliness, but he doesn’t like it very much, either.
* Last line is similar to the first line
