Introduction

Adobe Photoshop CC is a graphics design and imageenhancement program that runs seamlessly on bothWindows and Macintosh platforms. Photoshop CC is a stand-alone program, but it's also part of Adobe's Creative Cloud ofprofessional programs that work together to help you createdesigns in print, on the web, or on mobile devices. AdobeCreative Cloud also includes additional Adobe services andtools-such as Bridge, Camera Raw plug-in, Media Encoder,Extension Manager, Exchange, and ExtendScriptToolkit-tohelp you manage and work with files. The process of installing the Photoshop program, either 32- or 64-bitedition, is fairly straightforward; you download the Photoshop CCsoft-ware from Adobe Creative Cloud (New!) to your computer and double-click the setup program, and then follow the on-screen instructions. Ifyou meet the minimum system requirements, the installer will guide youthrough the steps to complete the installation. Remember to have yourserial number handy, because you will have to type it in during theinstallation process. You can start Photoshop in several ways, depending on the platformand version you are using. When you start Photoshop, the program dis-plays the Photoshop window. The program also checks for updates toPhotoshop and related CCsoftware using the Adobe ApplicationManager. In order to access online content and sync program settings(New!) on Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe.com, you'll need to sign into the service with your Adobe ID. If you're not signed in when you startPhotoshop, you'll be asked to sign in, which you can also do or sign outfrom the Help menu (New!). In addition, if you synced program settings(New!) on Creative Cloud from another computer and there is a conflict,you'll be asked to sync program settings to this computer.

Using Photoshop in 32-bit and 64-bit ModeThe terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer CPU process-es information. A 64-bit system handles large amounts of RAM moreeffectively than 32-bit systems. Photoshop in 64-bit mode takesadvantage of more than 4 GB of RAM when needed, instead of swap-ping out to the hard drive, which increases performance. When youinstall a 64-bit version of Photoshop on a 64-bit system and version ofWindows 7 or 8, you can use Photoshop in 32-bit or 64-bit modes.When you install a 32-bit version of Photoshop, you can only use it in32-bit mode. For Windows on a 64-bit system, Photoshop CC installs32-bit and 64-bit versions with shortcuts on the Start menu, whereyou can start either one. For the Mac (10.6 or 10.7), Photoshop CConly installs one version in 64-bit mode.
