The header here plays the role of helping the magazine to sell. Here it is offering a free £20 gift voucher which will make people buy the magazine just for the gift card even though they don't normally read that type of magazine. It is really important for this reason and is placed right at the top of the magazine so that it is easier to spot.

The main image of the magazine is a medium close up of a well known hip hop artist, 50 cent. The rule of thirds is used here for the image to attract the readers and attention and drag the readers eyes to the main image. 50 cent has a sort of a straight look that all hip hop artists would have to make them and their music seem serious and appeal to teenagers who are interested In hip hop and rap.

The selling line here is in big bold writing and filled in white colour which makes it stand out to the audience. There is no shadow or effects on the font to give the audience the serious sort of attitude that the hip hop artist would have.

The masthead in this magazine is the biggest font in the front page and stands out from the rest of the magazine so that the reader knows the name of the magazine he is reading without having to look for it. Another benefit of this is because the reader already knows the name of the magazine if the reader enjoys the magazine he purchased already, it would make him want to buy more magazines from the same company/brand. The font is also consistent and there is not a huge variety of fonts in the magazine.

There is consistent use of colours schemes in this image to create a professional and better looking magazine. The magazine uses three main colours here which are black , white and red.

The masthead in this magazine stands out from the rest of the fonts as it contains three colours and it is the largest font with white and black outline simply because the masthead is the main focus of the magazine .

The header here contains a attractive line ‘New Albums’ which would immediately attract the reader into considering the magazine and picking it up from the shelf. The font is also in capital letters with red writing on top of the black background so that it stands out from the rest of the bright colours in the magazine and appeal to the audience.

The main image here is another image of a well known celebrity, however this time it is a long shot. He has a straight innocent look and he's head is tilted to the left a little and resting on his hand. He is wearing a brown scarf with a suit on and no tie. He's shirt is unbuttoned and plain white. The top part of the background is a plain yellow colour however towards the bottom it looks like he is resting on a table with a vase and drink which could suggest he is in some sort of luxury hotel or something along them lines.

The main sell line is in two types of fonts and colours which makes the sell line more appealing and draws attention. Also the word ‘exclusive’ and the phrase’ solo album’ makes the readers want to know more about this new solo album therefore creates more drama and interest and makes the magazine look as if it has a lot of worthwhile content.

The Bar code, date and price are all crucial conventions on any magazines if they are to look professional and even sell. It is proportionately, a small box and tends to be placed towards the bottom right of the page (out of the way of the main magazine cover lines, sell lines etc.

Page 3: Analysing The magazines

The masthead in this magazine is also similarly to most magazines, the biggest font in the magazine and it is unique because it is the only yellow font with black outline in the magazine. The colours fonts and sizes used will attract the readers eyes and will make the magazine stand out more therefore giving it a more professional and interesting look.

The header in this magazine is also another line that can also be looked at as a selling line because it would attract DJ’s into buying the magazine to try and give/sell their beats to these famous artists.

The main cover of this magazine is a medium shot of ill Wayne, yet another famous celebrity. He is holding a microphone while it is tilted down from the rope as if to make him look like he is a skilled master of rapping and using microphones and other music equipment. Like the rest of African rappers he is wearing a baseball cap which would make him look ‘cool’ in the eyes of people who are interested in this genre. He's face is tilted to the right a little and he has a moody, not interested look on his face as if to make his talent look easy and not hard work.

The use of consistent colour schemes in this magazine has a big effect on the look of it. The use of cold colours for examples, blue, white and black make the magazine more appealing and attractive. Also there are only three types of fonts in this magazine which is also consistent likewise with the colours.

The page numbers here are in a different colour to the heading of the page to make it stand out and easier to read. The page headings are all in bold and the description of them is under in smaller writing because it is not as important as the header of the page.

The main image of the contents page is placed apart from the page numbers and headings. It is a medium long shot of the famous rapper 50 cent. He is wearing a long t shirt which appeals to most hip hop fans and makes him look ‘cool’.

The magazine layout is very simple and easy to understand and plain instead of having lots of different colours fonts and images. This layout contains the main image in the left hand side and the contents on the right hand side. There is also only one picture in the whole contents page which suggests again that the contents page is a simple layed out page so that it is easier to read and look at.

The issue date is placed in a small font on the left hand side of the magazine cover to show that this magazine is updated, and to let the reader know how new the information is.

This image is the biggest image on the contents page to show that it is the most important, and using the page number gives the audience the page they can go to find out more about the picture. The image shows a person using musical instruments on stage. The image is in black and white so that it looks more professional and to stand out from the rest of the pictures.

On the left hand side there are 8 different titles that categorise the different parts of the magazine for example, ‘jazz is’, ‘The works ‘etc. This all makes it easier to read and also easier to find the part the audience is looking to read first, and also gives them a rough idea of what the magazine contains.

All the images are in different camera shots, these shots give different appearances and styles. All the images have page numbers however no caption, as if to make the reader try and figure out a caption in his mind because like they all say pictures speak for them selves.

The style of fonts and colours used in this magazine are really consistent. There are only three types of fonts and colours used. The three main colours are red white and black. The use of consistent colours make the magazine look more attractive and appealing and also somehow easier to read.

The NME logo is in bright red with white outline which stands out from the rest of the contents page and also stands out from the rest of the green themed page.. Also unlike most magazines the contents page doesn't have the title ‘contents’ instead the masthead is in its place to remind the audience of the magazine they are reading so that if they enjoy reading the magazine they would know the company name so they could go purchase more magazines from the same company.

Even though the magazine layout looks complicated and hard to find the things you are looking for, it is designed in a clever way to put all the contents pages and numbers on the left and the images and titles on the centre of the page so that it is the first thing that would grab the audiences attention and then they could move on to looking through the contents and also the extra bit of news on the right.

There is a little subscription on the bottom of the magazine. It has its own box and stands out from the rest of the magazine with its dark colour, so that it is one of the first things the audience will see. The words save over £45 are in bold yellow writing which will lure the reader into subscribing for the magazine to save over £45.

The phrase ‘this week’ immediately tells the reader that the magazine contains news about this whole week and not just a day or two. Also it informs them that the magazine is updated and not talking about things that have happened two or three weeks before.

The phrase ‘world exclusive’ is another eye catching line that would appeal to the audience. It is placed on top of the main image in white colour font on top of the red banner sot that it stands out from the rest of the double page.

Kerrang have added their website in the double page spread which lures the audience into logging onto the page and finding out more about the company and other news that the company have on their site. The word ‘NEWS’ is in big bold red writing so that it attracts the readers attention.

The main image is of a rock artist wearing a denim jacket with a long fringe covering his face. This look attracts all rock fans likewise with the hip hop genre baseball caps and chains attracts hip hop fans. He is holding a microphone while it is on the stand as if he is performing in a live concert .

Drop caps is being used here to attract the readers eyes into the big M which is in red font unlike the rest of the text which is in white font. The red font contrasts with the black background to make it appeal more to the audience. Also the contracts of white and black text is the strongest contracts which makes it stand out to the audience.

Page 8: Analysing The magazines

On this double page spread the text occupy's the bottom left of the page and is in really small font, compared to the quote on the right hand side. The reason for this is that the quote would make the audience want to read on more about the double page spread even if the text isn't as appealing as the rest of the magazine.

The image of the 6 people in the double page takes up most of the double page which shows its importance to the audience. All the men are wearing casual clothes, for example jeans denim jackets/leather jackets and trainers etc. They all have straight looks on their face and are looking towards the camera.

Here again drop caps is being used to attract the reader into reading the text. However this time the drop cap is the same colour as the text so that it looks simple and unique.

The text is written in three sections so that it is simple to read. A consistent font is used how ever the sentences vary in length to give a professional look. Also an interesting thing to point out is that the text is placed in big chunks next to each other as if the same as the men standing next to each other to give the magazine a more powerful interesting look.

Page 9: Analysing The magazines

The main image of the double page spread enforces the title ‘the teenagers’ as the main image is a low angle of three teenagers sitting in a typical teenager room with posters all around. They are all dressed in casual clothes like shirts jeans and jackets and are all facing the camera.

There is a little section which is away from the main double page spread and has a different background colour to the rest of the page which would attract the audience into reading it. The little section advertises bands of the same type of genre and contains images of the artists involved in it.

The use of consistent colour schemes in this double page gives the pages a professional look and has a huge effect on the final look of it. Also the use of reverse colours for example white font on blue background and black font on blue background also makes the double page stand out and appeal more to the audience,
