Academic Structure Overview

Academic Institution identifies a particular institution. Because Cal Poly Pomona is one institution, we have only one Academic Institution code (POCMP).

Academic Career: grouping of all academic work undertaken by a student at an institution, which the institution groups into a single student record. (Undergraduate, Post-baccalaureate, Extended Education)

Academic Program: students apply for and are admitted to an academic program, usually with the goal completing the program, sometimes a degree.

Academic Structure Overview (continued)

Academic Plan: is an area of study within an academic program. One plan equates to one major (or minor or credential or certificate). Students may have more than one academic plan. For example, a student may declare a minor or a double major or may be pursuing a teacher credential and a Master’s in Teacher Education at the same time.

Academic Sub-Plan: is an area of further specialization or concentration within an academic plan. At Cal Poly Pomona, these were previously called options. The academic sub-plan is always linked to a specific academic plan.

Academic Career

Undergraduate (UGRD) includes all programs and students prior to the attainment of the first baccalaureate degree. Open University programs and students are also included within this career.

Post-baccalaureate (PBAC) is used after the first baccalaureate degree is obtained. It includes second baccalaureates, masters’ degrees, and teacher credentials, as well as Open University programs and students.

Extended Education (EXED) houses programs run by the College of Extended Education such as Contract Credit coursework.

Academic Plans

An academic plan describes an area of study within an academic program. Usually, one plan represents one major, but a plan may also represent an option, minor, credential, or certificate as well. Students may have multiple academic plans. For example, a student may declare a double major or a minor or may pursue a teaching credential and a Master’s degree at the same time.

Academic Plans - continued

The first four characters in an academic plan are reserved for the major code (or equivalent). If a major code does not use all four characters, then an underscore (_) is used as a placeholder. For example:

AMM_ is the code for Apparel Merchandising & Management

ARCH is the code for Architecture BHS_ is the code for Behavioral Science UDCL is the code for Undeclared OPEN is the code for Open University

The next two characters (characters 5 and 6) are reserved for the objective:

BA is the code for Bachelor of Arts BS is the code for Bachelor of Science MA is the code for Master of Arts MS is the code for Master of Science CD is the code for Credential CC is the code for Clear Credential CA is the code for Advanced Credential XX is the code for No Degree or Objective OM is the code for Other Major (for double majors when there are two distinct

plans, this objective indicates the secondary major) OO is the code for Other Option (for students pursuing two options within the

same major, this objective indicates the secondary major.) NR is the code for Minor

The seventh character is always an underscore, which separates the major and objective from the last part of the plan code. This makes the code easier to read.

AMM_BS_

The eighth character of the plan code is an embedded version of the program code. This differentiates similar plans in various programs and allows you to identify at a glance the program to which the plan belongs.

Undergraduate Programs Codes: B is the code for Undergraduate Baccalaureate T is the code for Undergraduate Transitory E is the code for Undergraduate Extension Degree X is the code for Undergraduate Extension

The last two characters (characters 9 and 10) are reserved for the sub-plan code, if one is required or to identify minors

If the 5th and 6th characters are BA, BS, OM or OO then data in characters 9 and 10 represent sub-plans. Not all plans have sub-plans, so very often these two characters are blank. Embedding the sub-plan code within the plan differentiates similar plans within a program. Sub-plans use alpha-characters in the 9th and 10th field.

If the 5th and 6th characters are NR, this denotes a minor plan. Minors for each department are differentiated with a numeric value in the 9th and 10th field of the code. The long description explains the numeric value.

Academic Sub-Plans

An academic sub-plan represents an area of further specialization or concentration within an academic plan. At Cal Poly Pomona, these were previously called options. The academic sub-plan is always linked to a specific academic plan. See the previous section on Academic Plans for an explanation about how sub-plans are incorporated into plan codes.

Some example sub-plans are: FR is the code for Fashion Retailing, an option within Apparel

Merchandising & Management GA is the code for General Anthropology, an option within

Anthropology CM is the code for Cultural Resource Management, an option

within Anthropology
