Citation preview
ROMAN AQUEDUCT OF PATRAS
In the region “old Samakia”, a suburb just outside Patras, we find the remains of one of the oldest buildings in the area. The aqueduct of Patras, an exemplary construction of the Roman era, nowadays has been ruined by geological causes and the clay soil. The first remains of the building are found in Neromana Romanou and they seem to expand till Aroe, a distance of about 7,5 kilometers. It seems to be built by Emperor Hadrian in the early 2nd Century AD.
LOCATION
Starting from the springs of the small river Diakoniaris , in its current location Neromana Romanou and following a difficult path downwards through hills and valleys water reached the area of Aroe just behind the ancient citadel. The majority of pipelines was underground, mainly through the smoothand downhill slopes of the hills. They had large diameter and was vaulted. The remaining sections, especially in the canyons and where the height differences should be bridged (for a smooth downhill course) uses arches, over which the pipeline passed.
