ARCHAEOLOGICAL SERVEY OF INDIA

• The ASI is the premier institute for the search, study and preservation of cultural heritage in India. It established in 1861.

• The ASI has been active for the protection of underwater cultural heritage of the nation.

• Realizing the important of International Cooperation in this field, ASI sent its staff to France and Spain, to learn modern techniques used for the search of underwater cultural heritage, under cultural exchange programs.

OBJECTIVES

• The ASI, under the Ministry Of Culture, is the premier organization for the Archaeological researches and protection of the culture heritage of the nation.

• It regulates all Archaeological activities in the country as per the provisions of the Ancient monuments and Archaeological sites and Roman Act, 1958

• It also regulates Antiquities and Art Treasure Act. 1972.

• The country is divided into 24 circles, only for the maintenance of ancient monuments and Archaeological sites and remains of national importance.

• It conducting Archaeological research project through circles, museum, excavations branches, prehistory branches, science branch, horticulture branch, building survey project, temple survey projects and underwater archaeology wing.

• The ASI administers 3650 monuments and archaeological sites and remains of national importance under the provisions of the ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains Act. 1958 [No. 24 of 1958 & rule 1959].

• The importance sites excavated recently includes Harsha-ka-Tila at Thaneswar in Haryana exposing a culture sequence from the kushan period to medieval period.

Conservation & Preservation

The ASI as an attached office under the department of culture, Ministry of Tourism &

culture.

Structural Conservation

• It conserved the structure way back in the early historic period as evidence at Junagarh, Gujrat.

• The early attempts to give a legal framework for preventing vandalism were the 2 legislations namely the Bengal Regulations of 1810 & Madras Regulation of 1817.

• The conservation work of Stupas of Sanchi earlier lying in a maze of ruins gave the sites its prestine looks.

• The monuments & sites that received nominal funds & attention way back in 19th century was Taj Mahal, Tomb at Sikander, Qutab Minar, Sanchi, & Mathura which based on the proposal submitted in 1898.

• One of the foremost conservators, J. Marshall who laid down the principles of conservation was also instrumental in preserving a no. of monuments some of which are now under the World Heritage List.

• Some of the outstanding examples of such works are that of Bamiyan in Afganistan & later in the Angkor Vat of Combodia.

Chemical Preservation

• The Archaeological Survey of India’s Science Branch is responsible mainly for the chemical conservation treatment and preservation of some 3593 Protected monuments besides chemical preservation of museum and excavated objects countrywide.

Conclusion

So, being a citizen of India it is one of the most important right and duty of every true Indian

to help a hand in the operations (specially preservation) of this organization so as to

maintain the decorum and pride of incredible india.
