Design and Modeling of Information and Experiences
Why do digital projects fail?
“More software projects have gone awry for lack of calendar time than
for all other causes combined.
Why is this cause of disaster so common?”
Fred Brooks
Brooks’ Law:
“Adding manpower to a late software project makes it later.”
Brooks’ Law Corollary:
Nine women can’t make a baby in a month.
How old is Brooks’ Law?
The insights that led to Brooks’ Law were a result of Fred Brooks work on IBM OS/
360 in the early 1960’s.
Brooks’ Law is half a century old, and it’s more relevant today than ever.
Who cares? What did software produced by this guy Fred Brooks ever accomplish?
This.
Computers used at Nasa’s Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston during the Apollo program: IBM System/360 Model 75.
A Brief History of Digital Collaboration:
The Mythical Man-Month - 1975
The Cathedral and the Bazaar - 1997
Cluetrain Manifesto - 1999
Agile Manifesto - 2001
The Cathedral and the Bazaar
“Plan to throw one away; you will, anyhow.” !“Treating your users as co-developers is your least-hassle route to rapid code improvement and effective debugging.”!!
The Cluetrain Manifesto
!!“Markets are conversations. !Hyperlinks subvert hierarchy.” !
Agile Manifesto
“Individuals and interactions over processes and tools. !Working software over comprehensive documentation. !Customer collaboration over contract negotiation. !Responding to change over following a plan.”

How we collaborate
At Factor, we practice some of these collaborative techniques....
Face to Face
Document Collaboration
Design Workshops
Working the Walls
Client and Customer Collaboration
Prototyping
Design Workshop Exercise
Goals of the Exercise● Generate lots of ideas without limits ● Get everyone designing ● Use different parts of your brain ● Separate creation and critique ● Work in teams / collaborate ● Work iteratively ● Intentionally work within extreme time constraints
Charrette BenefitsDraw out agendas, pre-conceptions • Inspire an environment of collaboration and teamsmanship • Bring the best work forward quickly
Workshop Agenda
Part 1: Individual Sketching - 5:00
Each person generates as many concepts as possible. !Sketch whatever is required to communicate your concept.
Part 2: Consolidation - 10:00Come together as a team to synthesize everyone’s concepts. Combine concepts to integrate and strengthen.
Part 3: Pitch Development - 10:00Create a 3 minute pitch that concisely states your experience concept. !Remember, you will pitch your concept to the whole room!
Part 4: Present to the groupEach team has 3 minutes to pitch its concept to the rest of the room. !Every team member must be part of the presentation!
Form 5 GroupsCount off 1 thru 5 (remember your number!!) !Find your group. !Get your supplies, meet your team, wait for instructions.
Challenge: Design a Locavore Produce App/Service.!● Account for customers, staff, systems, and processes. You may include environmental design, touch screens, personal devices, web, etc. Anything goes!
Discussion, Q&A - 5:00Ask us anything!
