Purpose of AssessmentTo determine what a student knows.What deficits a student may have.How a student learns.How a student compares with others.How to improve learning.If learning has been successful.

AssessmentsThere are four broad types of assessment.ScreeningDiagnosticProgress MonitoringSummative

ScreeningTargeted to determine if further assessment is needed to locate weaknesses.Usually brief in nature and given to groups or individuals.Used to predict future performance or determine student weaknesses.Examples: Word Identification Fluency-WIF, Oral Reading Fluency ORF.

DiagnosticStandardized Norm referenced or informal.Designed to provide specific information and target specific areas of difficulty a student may be having.Examples: informal reading inventory, diagnostic assessment of reading, Qualitative Reading Inventory.

Progress MonitoringAdministered periodically to determine if the intervention program is working or if student is making appropriate growth.Examples: running records, anecdotal notes, timed reading tests, Performance Based Rubrics.

Outcome Measures (Summative Assessments)Used at the end of program, year, course, or unit.Used to determine the level of achievement or proficiency.Typically administered in groups, usually Norm-referenced, standardized rather than informal, used to determine if the district, school, or subgroup is making adequate yearly progress Examples: FSA, FASA.
