WHAT IS YOUR GENDER?

ANALYSIS DATA

Out of the 83 responses, ¾ of the people survey were female. Therefore, with knowledge of this, I will have to take into account the responses given to the actual horror film specific questions. Of course there are male responses as well which again I will take into account.

WHAT IS YOUR AGE?

ANALYSIS DATA For this question, I had a good

spread of age ranges and the vast majority of the ranges were filled. From the chart, just over half of the responses were in the 16 – 24 category. This could be because the link was promoted on my Facebook, where most of my friends on there are around this age. However, knowing I have a big chunk from this age category, this will have an effect on the horror specific questions, so this will be taken into consideration.

DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF AS AN ADMIRER OF HORROR MOVIES?

ANALYSIS DATA This response shows that

horror movies are unpopular to the people asked. However, knowing that ¾ of the responders were female this means that there is a mix of girls and boys on the yes and no sides. This will also be relevant when it comes to why they may not like jump scares or what wouldn’t attract them to a horror movie.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU WATCH HORROR MOVIES?

ANALYSIS DATA This response didn’t surprise

very much when it came to the never and once a year answers as this has a similar percentage as the ‘no’ chunk in the last question. However, again there is a good spread of time frames and all have been chosen and shows that the majority of people actually watch horror movies, showing there is an audience for horror movies.

IF 1 IS THE MOST IMPORTANT AND 7 IS THE LEAST IMPORTANT, RANK EACH OF THE CHOICES FROM THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE IN A HORROR MOVIE TO THE LEAST IMPORTANT.

This chart shows that nearly half the people I surveyed thought that the storyline was the most important and nearly a quarter agreed that location was the least important in a horror film. It is quite interesting to look at how many votes are for sound, I will now seriously look at how I will use sound as I must agree that sound can tip the balance between a mediocre film and a great film.

WHAT SUB GENRES OF HORROR WOULD YOU MOST LIKELY WATCH?

ANALYSIS DATA This chart shows a really good

mix responses. I had a presumption that there wouldn’t be a massive majority for one answer choice, which is what happened. I was surprised about the Slasher choice only getting 3 votes, I thought it would get more as most of the popular movies in horror are under the category of slasher. The other films people mentioned were comedic and slapstick horrors and vintage horror.

WHAT WOULD ATTRACT YOU TO WATCHING A HORROR MOVIE?

ANALYSIS DATA This response was probably

the most surprising. Most of the responders thought that an interesting storyline or plot would attract them to seeing a horror film. It is also really interesting to see that not that many people are attracted to the film through the characters, knowing that characters are the people that present the storyline.

WHAT WOULDN’T ATTRACT YOU TO WATCHING A HORROR MOVIE?

ANALYSIS DATA I changed one word in this

question and swapped the answers to negative features and there is a massive change in terms of distribution. This may be because when horror movies are bad you are able to ick up on faults a lot more. Even though the question is an opposing question to the previous question the storyline answer choice was the most voted answer but only very slightly.

WHAT SCARES YOU THE MOST?

ANALYSIS DATA In this response, there is a

split response between 2 of the answers and a few votes for the rest of the answers. It is good to see that people do fear the unknown elements and the reality of the world as in my film I shall be making, my ‘villain’ is a cross between a supernatural being and a serial killer.

DO YOU LIKE JUMP SCARES? WHY OR WHY NOT?

ANALYSIS DATA The responses for this were

not multiple choice as I wanted to know the opinion and reasons for why people did or didn’t like jump scares in horror movies. There was a lot of mixed views and people may have agreed that they did or didn’t like them, yet gave different reasons e.g. someone said that they didn’t like jump scares because it scared them and some said they didn’t like them because they saw it as a cheap gimmick. This has made me realise that jump scares do not necessarily go with horror movies.
