One Book, One CommunityFirst time for WestervilleTurning the pages togetherThe One Book, One Community program invites all community members to read the same book and come together to discuss it in a variety of settings. Readings, group discussions and other events will put us all on the same page.

Our selected title The One Book title is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. Crafted as a series of letters, the nationally bestselling novel is a story of love and hope set against the backdrop of a world emerging from the shadow of World War II. Clever quips and endearing characters abound on the English island of Guernsey.

A good summer readYou can get a head start by checking out or reserving a copy of the One Book selection and enjoying it as part of your summer reading.

Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys

The library is among125 libraries and state humanities councils nationwide selected to receive a grant for the Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys project, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. Thirty topic-related books and movies were also received with the grant and will soon be available in our catalog.

Rock sculpture artists Al & Penny Nelson created a beautiful sculpture for our library. Help chip away rock from the sculpture and leave with a small stone carving of your own. Ages 6-12. Registration required.

Model Airplane Display& Library Fly DayFriday, July 26 11am-4pmDisplay at the librarySaturday, July 27 9am-2pmFly Day at Alum Creek State Park

Visit the display on Friday, then on Saturday be at Alum Creek Park (flying field is east of the dam at 6590 Africa Road) to see a variety of radio-controlled planes. An hour of flight instruction begins at 9am. Then, trainers will assist children in trial flights. Free hot dogs and soft drinks. Hosted by the Westerville Model Aeronautics Association.

Make a Sewing Kit Monday, August 5 4-5pm

Make a small mason jar sewing kit and a needle book to go with it. Then, we'll stock it with simple essentials. Ages 8-11. Registration opens July 22.

Year after year, the Friends of the Westerville Public Library donate hundreds of hours of volunteer service. Thanks to their generosity and efforts, our library is able to reach new heights in serving the people of Westerville.

These dedicated, talented and enthusiastic people operate the Friends Shoppe, selling used books and many other gift items. They also stock the mallway bookcases with donated books for sale.

Due to their hard work, they are able to provide funds that sponsor prizes for young readers and programs that entertain all ages in the summer. Our Friends also provide funds for some of the library’s major purchases including the Outreach delivery vans, chairs and tables for the library meeting rooms, and a myriad of other programs and services enjoyed by our community.

On July 11th the Friends will once again be hosting their signature event, the Friends Ice Cream Social. This is a milestone year as the social is celebrating its 20th anniversary. We hope you will join us for this great event and show your appreciation for this outstanding organization.

Ice Cream Social celebrates 20 yearsPlease join the Friends for our 20th annual Ice Cream Social on Thursday, July 11, from 7 to 8:30pm. This family event will include live music on the library’s front lawn, face painting thanks to Westerville Parks and Recreation, delicious ice cream with your choice of toppings and a story time presented at 7pm and again at 7:30pm by Youth Services.

This year we will welcome the musical group Meek Quartet featuringvocalists with guitar accompaniment.

The ice cream dipping, at $1 per serving, will take place in the mallway. All proceeds from the event will, as always, benefit the library. – Arlene Roeder, President Friends of the Library

Friday Celebrated author and illustrator of thirty books for kids, Will Hillenbrand will give a behind-the-scenes look at his artwork. Children will create art with Will and see it displayed at the Westerville Music and Arts Festival Kids Tent.

Saturday See Will's original journals and sketches, learn how he illustrates his books and enjoy a storytime. Art prints of Will's work and books will be available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Westerville Art in Public Spaces.

Did you know the library offers . . .pre-loaded NOOK readers?Favorite books for kids and teens are loaded on Nook readers and have been available in Youth Services since January. The Nooks feature titles selected according to reading level and interest: four are loaded with picture books; four contain titles for juvenile-level readers; and three are loaded with titles for teens. Books and Movies this summer Visit our Westerville police and fire exhibitsThe Local History Center is pleased to announce the unveiling of two new displays on its second floor which are available for viewing Monday through Friday 9am -6pm. The police display was the brainchild of retired police Lt. Leonard D. Day who collected items from fellow retirees and

arranged for the construction of a display case.

Day, who passed away before the completion of the project, donated a part of his uniform for the case. Items displayed include the old jail cell log book and key. The Fire Department has provided firefighting garb for its display. Both displays contain old photographs. A timeline shares history of both departments.
