My name is David Turnbull and in December of lastyear, I participated in Project 4 Awesome.
This is a YouTube-centric event wherechannels share their support for theirfavourite charities in an effort to raise
money and spread awareness.
But I didn’t want to limit myself to YouTube.
The plan was to raise $5,000 for charity: water, who provide people with access to clean drinking
water all over the world.
To begin with, I published a video aboutthe plan on my YouTube channel.
It has been viewed 22,676 times.
But I also blogged about it on nintendo3dsblog.com,which I own and update on a daily basis.
This put it in front of the ten’s of thousands ofreaders who read the blog every day.
The strategy was simple.
I shared my love of charity: water, told everyonewhat a difference just a few dollars could make, andremained confident that if everyone chipped in, we
might be able to do something really special.
Along the way, I shared our progress byposting it to the blog and tweeting aboutit via the @Nintendo3DSBlog account.
I even suggested that, if people were to donate, theycould “Be Like Batman” and save lives. This turned out
to be more motivating than I’d actually intended.
As a result, the community wasmore than supportive.
They made a real difference.
In less than twelve days, we raised $5,669,which is more than enough to build an entire
well purely through our donations.
It will provide 283 people withaccess to clean drinking water.
And it was only then I realised just howpowerful this medium can be...
...which only makes me all the more excited forthe next time Project 4 Awesome is upon us. I’malready planning for bigger and better things.
