“La luna e i falò” descrive il viaggio nel tempo di un trovatello cresciuto bracciante in una fattoria delle Langhe, emigrato in America, e tornato con un po’ di fortuna nelle sue campagne alla ricerca del tempo perduto trascorso tra le esperienze di garzone e di emigrante. Il romanzo è semplice e comunicativo, e attraverso il protagonista anche Pavese, lo scrittore, rientra in patria rivedendo i luoghi della sua infanzia.

“ The moon and the bonfires” describes the travel through time of a poor foundling who grows up in a farm in the Langhe, migrates to America, then returns to his country looking for the lost time. The novel is simple and communicative. Through the protagonist the writer goes back to his home-land and visits his birthplace again.

Nella lingua, come nella rappresentazioni di cose e creature, appare qualcosa di nuovo. Il paesaggio descritto ritrova una terra modellata dalla dura fatica dell’uomo. In nessuna delle sue opere Pavese era riuscito a riassumere in una narrazione tutti gli elementi della propria intima personalità, in particolare la paura di perdere la propria identità. Così Anguilla (soprannome del protagonista), dopo essere riuscito a guadagnare un po’ di soldi in America, decide di ritornare nel suo luogo d’origine dove vuole scavare nel passato per ritrovare la sua identità.

There is something new in the language and in the representation of things and creatures. The landmark represents the ground that men’s hard labor has changed and shaped. In his previous novels Paves hadn’t been able to include all the elements of his inner personality, especially the fear he may lose his identity. So Anguilla, the main character, after earning some money in America, decides to go back to his birthplace. There he wants to go deep into his past life to find his identity.

magnifici. Lo scrittore esprime le proprie emozioni descrivendo al meglio tutti i particolari della vita del tempo. A questo punto Anguilla ritrova in patria Nuto, un vecchio amico, che ha cambiato completamente vita, da musicista vagabondo, a falegname e serio padre. Nuto aiuta Anguilla a ritornare nel passato portandolo nei luoghi in cui ha trascorso la sua infanzia, e qui scopre che tutto è cambiato. Molti suoi conoscenti sono morti per diversi motivi e tra queste le tre fanciulle che aveva amato da lontano.

In this novel the places are beautiful. The writer conveys his emotions describing all the details of those past times. Anguilla meets Nuto, a dear old friend, who has completely changed his life. He was a vagabond musician, now he is a woodworker and a good father. He helps Anguilla return to the past. He takes him to the places where he lived as a child just to find out that everything has changed. A lot of people have died and among these the three girls he had loved.

soprattutto la grande volontà del protagonista, che, pur essendo povero e avendo subito gravi traumi familiari e psicologici, riesce a trovare la sua strada nella vita e a realizzare i propri sogni. Al contrario Cinto, che è l’immagine di se stesso ragazzo, è zoppo e per questo limitato nella sua libertà e costretto a rimanere per sempre nel paese, ma anche più legato alla terra di quanto non lo sia il protagonista.

What strikes most in the novel is the protagonist’s strong will. Though he was poor and despite all the psychological and personal traumatic events he is able to find his way and realize his dreams. On the contrary Cinto, who represents him as a young boy, walks with a limp, he is not free and can’t leave his village , though he is so close to his land, more than the protagonist

ritrovare il suo passato ed afferma: << Un paese ci vuole, non fosse che per il gusto di andarsene via; un paese vuol dire non essere soli, sapere che nella gente, nelle piante, nella terra c'è qualcosa di tuo che, anche quando non ci sei, resta ad aspettarti>>.

Anguilla wants to regain his past and says:” You need a home-land, were it just for the pleasure to leave; a home land means you are not alone, you know there is something of yourself in the people, in the trees, in the ground that keeps waiting for you even when you are away”.

Something about the author

Cesare Pavese, scrittore, poeta, saggista e traduttore, nasce il 9 settembre del 1908 a Santo Stefano Belbo, in provincia di Cuneo. Compie i suoi primi studi a Torino. Nel 1935 viene arrestato perché, come intellettuale, si oppone al fascismo. Il suo ultimo libro è “ La luna e i falò” scritto nel 1949 e pubblicato nel 1950. Contiene numerosi elementi autobiografici e conclude la sua carriera di narratore.

Cesare Pavese is a famous Italian writer, poet, essayist and translator. He was born on 9th September 1908 in Santo Stefano Belbo in the province of Cuneo. He started studying in Turin. In 1935 he was arrested because of his opposition to fascism. His last book “ La luna e I falò”( The moon and the bonfires)was written in 1949 and published in 1950. The book contains a lot of autobiographical details and closes his career as a writer.

Cesare Pavese muore il 27 agosto del 1950 in una camera d’albergo di Torino a soli 42 anni, si toglie la vita lasciando scritto delle frasi su un foglio dicendo che si toglieva la vita per il piacere degli altri.

Cesare Pavese died at 42 on 27th August 1950 in a hotel room in Tourin. He committed suicide and left a few words on a sheet of paper. He was killing himself for the people’s pleasure
