Brown at 60: Is Full Equality Within Our Grasp?

ACLU Marks Landmark Ruling With Event Addressing Zero Tolerance, School-to-Prison Pipeline and the Promise of Brown

National Archives, May 15, Noon–2 p.m. EDT WASHINGTON—The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) will observe the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic Brown v. Board of Education ruling with an event that engages national civic leaders, policy experts and racial justice advocates in a conversation exploring equal educational opportunity and the new barriers to the “promise of Brown” in the 21st century. The event, co-sponsored by the Afro-American History Society, will also spotlight priorities of the ACLU’s Racial Justice Program to stem the school-to-prison pipeline — a disturbing national trend that targets Black and Latino students, pushing them out of the classroom and into the criminal justice system. Data reveal that Black students are subjected to suspensions and expulsions at a rate three times higher than their white peers. Also, Black children make up 18 percent of preschool enrollment, but are nearly half of preschool children receiving more than one out-of-school suspension. The Education and Justice departments jointly released new guidelines for school discipline that take aim at discriminatory and excessive practices against students of color and students with disabilities.
