C105 STOICHIOMETRY RACE : COOKING EDITION

RACE RULES 1. Each team has to work together on a stoichiometry problem

2. All team members must agree on the final answer before you submit it

3. To submit an answer write it down and raise it up so everyone can see it

4. If your answer is correct your team explains how to do it to the class and receives 2 points

5. If the answer is wrong it is -1 point

6. You can submit as many answers in each round as you want, but keep in mind, every wrong answer subtracts points and the other teams can check

their answers against yours.

7. All teams will continue to work on the problem until one of the teams has the correct answer

8. The team with the most points at the end gets candy (mmmmmmm) !!

TEAM NAMES ??

THERE ARE 3 ROUNDS……EACH GET HARDER…

READY, SET, GO !!

ROUND 1 : BREAKFAST I decided to wake up early and cook my roommates breakfast (gosh I’m so nice)

I have 2 dozen eggs in my fridge I want to plate 2 eggs per plate How many plates can I make ?

ANSWER: 12

ROUND 2 : SNACK The campus center wants to hand out free strawberry smoothies ( I wish……..) to the first people that walk in the door.

To make a smoothie you need 2 cups of milk + 5 strawberries + 1 cup of yogurt

They check their supplies and see they have: 2 gallons of milk ( 1 gallon = 16 cups) 55 strawberries 20 cups of yogurt

Questions: How many people get smoothies ?? What is the limiting ingredient ?? Balanced equation for a strawberry smoothie??

ANSWER: 11 SMOOTHIES;STRAWBERRIES

2CUPS OF MILK + 5 STRAWBERRIES + 1CUP OF YOGURT = 1 STRAWBERRY SMOOTHIE

ROUND 3 : LUNCH I'm at my family reunion and every one is demanding my famous BLT (Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato) sandwiches for lunch. I make a BLT with 2 slices of bread, 2 pieces of bacon, 1 slice of tomato, and 1 piece of lettuce. I go to my fridge, and see that I have:

6 heads of lettuce (2 heads = 25 pieces of lettuce) 160 pieces of bacon 15 tomatoes ( 1 tomato = 4 slices) 3 loafs of Wheat bread (1 loaf= 20 slices) 4 loafs of White bread (1 loaf = 20 slices) Shoot I’m all outta mayo, oh well……

I have 32 people on my mom’s side and 22 people on my dad’s side My mom’s side wants wheat sandwiches, and my dad’s side wants white sandwiches Question: Can I make the right amount of sandwiches for both sides of my family? (Must specify answer, can’t just say yes or no. Is there a surplus, shortage, which

side?)

BLT Equation ??

ANSWER: NO; 2 WHEAT SANDWICHES SHORT

2 PIECES OF BACON + 2 SLICES OF BREAD + 1 SLICE OF TOMATO +1 PIECE OF LETTUCE = 1 BLT

STOICHIOMETRY : “The numerical relationships between chemical amounts in a balanced chemical equation are called reaction stoichiometry”

“The concepts of stoichiometry are similar to those in a cooking

recipe.”
