THE SURPRISING BENEFITS OF HAVING A‘Frenemy’ at work - for future MBAs!
DO YOU HAVE A COLLEAGUE/CLASSMATE THAT YOU SOMETIMES LIKE TO HANG-OUT WITH
But who also may have a tendency to drive you crazy?
A LAYMAN WOULD REFER TO THIS CO-WORKER OR CLASSMATE AS A ‘FRENEMY’!
But what good can be obtained from having this annoying
person around who only causes
Me stress?
BUT SOCIAL SCIENTISTS WOULD BEG TO DIFFER
They refer to a layman’s frenemy relationship as an “ambivalent relationship”.
A FRENEMY DOES NOT ONLY CAUSE YOU UNNECESSARY STRESS, THEY MAY ACTUALLY MAKE YOU BETTER AT YOUR JOB!
This information was revealed by the researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. And also by the researchers at Lehigh University.
THEIR FRENEMY EXPERIMENT WENT SOMETHING LIKE THIS…
They paired up a bunch of undergrads and asked them to send each other a few questions via instant message.
The initial few questions were very encouraging ones.
But then for a half of the group the later questions were ordered to be undermining ones. Like who has a better GPA.
SIMPLY PUT, FRENEMISHIP WAS ESTABLISHED AMONG THEM.
Errur filed bloog poot?!
At the end of the experiment each student was asked to edit an error
filled blog post
THE RESEARCHERS TRICKED THEM!
The editors were told that this blog was written by their team-partners, but was actually written by the scientists. Those who were engaged in the frenemy relationship, actually did better at picking out the mistakes, than those who were normal friendly teams.
SURPRISINGLY ENOUGH THE AMBIVALENT GROUP WAS
ALSO FOUND TO BE MORE…
Empathetic to their partners!
BUT WHY?That’s because may be he/she is someone you keep complaining about. And hence, you pay attention to.
A frenemy has a way of getting under one’s skin in which a pure friend or a pure enemy cannot.
Just think about it, you probably complain a lot about this person.
Or in other words, you very well know how they tick you off!
But you also think and know about how they tick…and so, you want to perform better than your frenemy. This makes you work harder.
SO, THE NEXT TIME YOU GRIPE ABOUT YOUR HATED
FRENEMY…
Think about all the ways they help you even when they drive you crazy.
SO TO DO BETTER AT YOUR MBA ASSIGNMENTS
