CERN’s
Large Hadron Collider
What
is
CERN?
CERN is

FUNDAMENTAL PARTICLES
– the basic particles
What is the
Large Hadron Collider?
The LARGE HADRON COLLIDER, or the LHC, is a
machine built by CERN
Its point is to solve some
questions about the universe
and to re-create the conditions
after the BIG BANG
Then it will also be possible to
see what will happen to the
universe later
because it is approximately
27 km in circumference.

Large Hadron Collider
Hadrons are particles made
only of QUARKS.
*
because inside the machine,
particles collide.
Large Hadron Collider
*QUARKS and LEPTONS
are FUNDAMENTAL
PARTICLES
*Protons and neutrons are made up of QUARKS
Electrons are types of LEPTONS
The first time it was lounged September 2008
During the first run, the magnets
of the LHC cooled down, and the
experiment couldn’t be carried
out
It took over a year to fix the LHC
The next time it was lounged
20 Nov 2009
We do not know how long the
experiment will last since no one
has ever done it before
It might last for years
How does the
LHC
work?
STEP 1:
Electrons are taken away from
hydrogen atoms, so that only
protons are left
OR
By accelerating lead vapor,
electrons are taken away from
lead atoms, so that only
the nucleus is left
STEP 2:
Beams of HADRONS in the LHC
are shot in different directions
At certain points, beams collide,
gaining more speed
The maximum speed that the
hadrons can reach is
0.999999991
the speed of light
Nothing can go faster than light.
However, there is no limit to
energy
Scientists hope to gain so much
energy that it will be enough to
create a model of the
BIG BANG
