Scenario: A funding committee whose membership

consists of Bill and Melinda Gates, Sheik Mohammed, and a representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) has $90 million.

The committee will listen to presentations from 6 groups, each of which will present a case in behalf of funding for efforts to combat an issue afflicting some African countries.

The committee will divide the $90 million among the three groups whose presentations were the most persuasive. (The class will act as the committee.)

Page 6: Challenges of Africa

Divide the class into six groups.

Randomly assign each group one of the following issues: Malaria, Ebola, Cholera, Illiteracy, Famine and Poverty.

There is only enough money to fund 3 of the 6 groups and explain that the 3 groups to be funded will be chosen on the basis of the quality of their case.

Page 15: Challenges of Africa

FAMINEAfrican areas that have been largely

affected by famine are in the countries of Ethiopia, Somalia, and the Sudan. All of these countries have been marked by corrupt governments as well as lack of rain fall.

What do you think the possible solutions are for this problem?

Page 16: Challenges of Africa

Africa’s Crisis

The continent of Africa has deposits of the world’s most valuable resources, but due to poverty, sickness, and corruption; the continent ranks among the highest in the world for all three of the same: poverty, sickness, and corruption.
