Chapter 6 Section 2I. Introduction to the Viewpoints of Earth

A. How to Find Places on Earth1. Longitude and Latitude can be used as a precise way to

determine location. 2. System of imaginary gridlines.

Page 3: Chapter 6: Section 2 Notes (viewpoints of earth)

Chapter 6 Section 2B. Latitude

1. Horizontal lines paralleling the Equator. a. Equator divides the Earth into Northern and Southern

Hemispheres. 2. Used to measure North and South3. Both poles are measured at 90 degrees.

a. North Pole= 90 degrees Northb. South Pole = 90 degrees South

Chapter 6 Section 2C. Longitude

1. Vertical lines (called meridians) intersecting the poles. 2. Measure positions East and West on a globe. 3. Begin with the Prime Meridian (0 degrees Longitude)

Chapter 6 Section 2II. Using Lines of Longitude

A. The Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude) runs from pole to pole through Greenwich, England)

1. West of the Prime Meridian is measured from 1 to 180 degrees West.

2. East of the Prime Meridian is measured from 1 to 180 degrees East.

3. The 180 degree meridian= International Date Linea. Opposite side of Earth to the Prime Meridian.

Chapter 6 Section 2B. Latitude and Longitude can be broken down

1. Degrees are the largest measure2. Degrees are divided into minutes3. Minutes are divided into seconds4. When writing coordinates latitude is always

first5. When writing coordinates; latitude always comes

first.

Chapter 6 Section 2III.Earth Time

A. What time is it on Earth?1. The answer actually depends on where you are

located. 2. The Earth is divided into 24 time zones.

a. Each time zone is only one hour different from the next time zone.

b. Every time zone is 15 degrees longitude wide. c. 6 time zones cover the United States.

Chapter 6 Section 2d. Every time zone you cross

going west time goes backwards.

e. Every time zone you cross going East time goes forward.

Chapter 6 :Section 2B. Calendar Dates

1. New days begin at 12 midnight for the time zone.

2. Crossing time zones gains or loses an hour. a. Traveling West: Minersville to California

1. 9 am in Minersville, 6 am in Californiab. Traveling East: California to Minersville

1. 9 am in California, 12 pm in Minersville

Chapter 6 :Section 23. Crossing the International Date Line (180 degrees

longitude)a. Gain or Lose one dayb. Traveling West: Asia to the United States

1. January 1st in Asia, December 31st in U.S.A.c. Traveling East: United States to Asia

1. January 1st in United State, January 2nd in Asia
