Past vs PresentPast

Present

The First Formal Chingay Parade in Singapore was mooted by the then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. The Chingay Parade then has different aspects of Chinese culture – dragon and lion dances, martial arts and street opera.

Chingay took on a multicultural flavour from 1976.Today, Chingay has become a uniquely Singaporean Lunar New Year tradition, held during the first weekend of the Lunar New Year. This yearly street parade is now a national festival, celebrated by Chinese, Malays, Indians and Eurasians alike.

Did you know?

In 1991, Chingay appears on the back of a Singapore $2 note.

What does the theme mean to us?

Different people made different contributions to the Chingay parade, where they knitted tapestries. This shows that Singaporeans work together as one, which depicts "one people".

Colours of Fabric, One people

Segments

Chinese Dance- 俏花旦

This dance comprises of dancers who wore specials costumes- with one feeler on each dancer's head. They were synchronized and their performance were AMAZING! We were engrossed in their AWESOME performance.

Multi-racial singing

"The Year of The Horse" Performance

One example of horse performance is in this picture, whereby there is this Big horse made of straw standing 8m tall and there is a 'God of Fortune' sitting on top of the horse.

Iconic landmarks of Singapore

Merlion's body represents Singapore's origin as a fishing village.

Changi Airport is a major aviation hub in Southeast Asia.

Singapore Grand Pix night race, Gardens by the bay, Marina Bay Sands etc.

Dragon & Lion Dance

International float- Japan

Koi fishes symbolize love and friendship in Japan.

They are performing with their traditional drum.

We are all FASCINATED by their resounding drumming.

Ge Tai ( 歌台 )

First-time Singapore Getai " 新加坡歌台 " at the parade with celebrity artistes Liu Ling Ling, Wang Lei, Lee Pei Fen and Rawi Hamin

Getai is a boisterous live stage performance held during the Ghost Festival.

Ge Tai 歌台 is a stage where Chinese Performers perform and sing, often in Hokkien dialect.

It was a Great performance!

Diverse Cultures, One People

This sums up the Chingay parade whereby a float

carries the words "Diverse Cultures,

One People".

Fireworks

What we enjoy about the Chingay paradeThe floats that were

lighted up with bright colours. It was a beautiful sight especially in the night.

The fireworks was very beautiful and it was a magnificent sight.

The cheering throughout the Chingay showed the unity of RVians.

Areas of improvement1. The microphone appeared muffled and we could not hear what the speaker was talking about - clearer microphone system

2. Messy when getting people to their seats - have more exits so that many people do not have to squeeze in through one exit

3. The chinese dance had "feelers" as part of their costume. When they were dancing, some of their "feelers" fell off - improve the quality of their costume/props

Is the money and time spent worth it?

- 3 to 5 millions are spent on the Chingay Parade

-Many rehearsals are held before the actual show

Group Reflection

Fun and eye-opening experience

The different types of floats represent different cultures from different races, such as Chinese, Malay, Indian, and others. Being multiracial is indeed a unique feature of Singapore.

This year's theme, "Colours of Fabric, One People" depicts the idea of Singaporeans, be it Chinese, Malay, or any other races, are united as one.

Group Reflection

Chingay also shows us what the youth and elderly in Singapore can do. The youth improve the society with their knowledge.

The government provides various type of entertainment for the elderly, such as setting up CDCs.

In conclusion, we learnt to view people equally, regardless of race and age. All citizens in Singapore can contribute to the society, hence we should treat each other equally.
