“I was hoping to communicate a better range of value in my drawing.”

“I think that I improved a lot on my self portrait. I really like my nose it looks like an actual nose.”

E. Ford

Page 34: Choice based art instruction for middle years and beyond

“The thing that I also thinks that needs improvement is maybe some of the shadow in the face in the cheeks, neck and hair.”

S. Newman

“I am trying to communicate family by showing the heart with people figures in it.”

“I really like the shading and the value I used to make it look realistic.”

M. Cook

“My newer self portrait is better because I took my time and paid attention to size by using my pencil to measure and remembering where the eyes go on an oval and the shape of the head.”

T. Williams

Page 38: Choice based art instruction for middle years and beyond

In my self portrait I wanted to portray my love of drawing hence the picture of me and my friends fighting dragons and monsters and me looking at a drawling in my sketch pad. I drew that 2 years ago and it still sits there. I also showed my skills as a martial artist in taekwondo through the belt hanging beside me and the trophy blocking the piranha poster I have. I should how I want to be a game designer and I like playing video games through the game boxes and the controller and then the books for my love of reading. I really find success in the way how it really looks real through the way I used perspective and shadow. I think It looks nice. I do however find some room for improvement in the face and how difficult the shading was on him. From far away he looks really alive and well, but unfortunately up close you see issues in the shadow under his nose, how his eyes are black and last the chair is funky. I find great improvement in my to self portraits through how in the first one he looks real but it's like he’s surrounded by light so he’s not got any shading. Also in the first one the background is blank so he looks bland as in the other one there is so much in the background and the walls have feel and some spots.
