THE CAUSES OF HIS VOYAGE’S

1. Europeans needed to find a new route to the spice islands and to avoid war countries .

2. They saw this as an opportunity to explore and claim new land .

3. They also saw it as an opportunity to spread Christianity .

4. There were myths and legends about places in Africa made out of gold and they wanted to claim this gold for the king and queen .

5. They wanted to map out the world better and explore more of the world .

6. He wanted to show people that the world not flat .

7. He promised the king and queen herbs , spices and gold .

8. Europe was running out of land to conquer and livestock to eat .

9. On his second voyage he went back to rescue his men and search for more gold .

KEY EVENTS

o King Ferdinand and queen Isabella of Spain funded him on his voyage .

o They gave him 3 ships the Nina , the Pinta and the Santa Maria and 80 -90 men to serve as crew members on his ships .

o He set sail on the 3rd of August 1492 .o He found land on the 12th of October 1492 . o He thought he was in Asia and named the

area the Indies and called the inhabitants Indians .

KEY EVENTS o At first the native Americans were

pleased to see the visitors as Columbus gave them cheep presents and bells , but he also claimed their land for Spain !!!

o On Christmas night 1493 the Santa Maria was wrecked it had hit a reef .Columbus left 40 men behind in a makeshift settlement on Hispaniola ( present-day Haiti and the Dominic Republic ) , while he returned to Spain .

KEY EVENT

o On his second voyage (1493-96) he returned to Hispaniola with 17 ships and over 1000 settlers .

o His third voyage (149-96) ended in disaster when he was sent back to Spain in chains .He had quarrelled with the governor of Hispaniola .

o During his fourth voyage (1502-04) he warned a different governor of Hispaniola about a hurricane , however the governor did not listen and 24 ships were lost . Columbus regarded his fourth voyage as his greatest .

KEY EVENT

o People from Europe sailed to America to start colonies. Some wanted to make the natives become Christians

o They began to treat the native Americans badly ,they made many of them work as slaves .

o Columbus sailed to America for the fourth time in 1502 . He was still hoping to land in China . This time he explored central America . His ships were too leaky to sail home , so he had to wait a year before being rescued .

o When he finally got back to Spain he was very sick and died in 1506

THE END RESULTS

He inspired Amerigo Vespucci to lead voyages to the what he called the “New World” , the new lands were named after him America .

After his voyages more sailors started to keep logs .

He proved the world was not flat but round . The improvement of their navigational skills

and ship building
