The ObjectiveRecognize and understand that, in her example, Asian American identities are multifaceted.

Wong stated, “The younger generation is seen to struggle with the conflicting conservation immigrant traditional values of Chinese Confucianism and the individualistic values of U.S. Americanism” (Wong, 95).

The WhyThere is this issue that people do not change. There seems to be the notion that ideas and traditions do not adapt and evolve, as we become a more global nation.

“The cultures of these countries have been preserved in the minds and subsequent practices of immigrants, seemingly frozen at the time of immigration” (Wong, 95).

The MethodologyWong mainly uses interviews to conduct her research. Interviews can be seen on page 95, 96, and 98. She also uses her own experiences and knowledge to make educated conclusions.

The ResultsWong concludes, “identity is fluid and shaped though experience” (Wong, 96).

She included a section from an interview with her young immigrant cousin and then comparing it with an interview of her mother.

The two responses are vastly different despite the fact that they are from the same culture.

The ApproachAccording to our textbook, “Critical methodologies analyze the large power structures that guide everyday life. Understanding this approach helps students to grasp the invisible forces that alter our lives” (Martin, 52).

Thus, Wong uses a critical approach when exploring the differences in culture across generations.

The Approach cont’dOn page 97 Wong uses the term diaspora. “A diaspora is the dispersion of minority group of people among a majority group beyond the boarders of the minority’s homeland” (Wong, 99). This is an example of a power struggle because individuals have to explore who they are as a individual and as a community.

What Do You Think? Why do you think that many white and other Americans tend to “lump” Asians into a large vastly diverse group?

Do you agree with Wong, “To choose one or the other is a grave mistake. Identity is fluid and shaped through experience” (Wong, 95).?
