COMMUNICATIONCommunication :
• Process in which people make a contact and share the information through transferred messages
• Creating , more or less permanent interpersonal ties by means of language and other symbolic behavior.
• Mechanism, through which people’s relationships may exist and develop.
Interpersonal communication :
• Exchange of verbal, vocal and nonverbal signals, in a certain context.
• The way to achieve higher level of cooperation between people.
STAGES OF COMMUNICATION
Interpretation of the
message
Selecting a channel of information
Forming the message
Transmission of the
message
Receiving the message
COMMUNICATION BARRIERSCHARACTERISTICS OF THE SENDER
• Sending conflicting or inconsistent signals (for example: we say one thing and our body another)
• Lack of sender’s credibility.• Unwillingness to communicate.• Transmission of incomplete
information.• Selecting unsuitable channels of
communication.• How would you feel if someone
started communicating with you using a sign language? If you don’t know the language, it could be a big problem for you
• Psychophysical condition – general discomfort could negatively influence communication. The sender could e.g. formulate ideas chaotically.
COMMUNICATION BARRIERSCHARACTERISTICS OF THE RECIPIENT
• Lack of habit of listening• Prejudice in relation to the topic
and the content of the message• Prejudice against the information
sender.• Selectivity of atention• Mental or physical condition.• Interrupting the information
sender• Performing other activities during
listening• Listening apparently• Paying attention to details,
changing the topic and content of the conversation.
COMMUNICATION BARRIERSINTERPERSONAL DYNAMICS
• Difference of state and authority. It is difficult to communicate when we can’t tell what we want. Is it easy for you to criticize a teacher and tell him what you think even if you are convinced that you are right ?
• Difference of perception. Maybe you felt sometimes that you are looking at the world differently than other people and felt misunderstood The way we see the world is shaped by individual atmosphere of each place where we grow up, not only by sex or culture. Therefore, usually things which are funny for you don’t have to be the same for others.
• The way of speaking. In the communication process vocabulary is of great importance. It is easy to see by the example of students who, are educated in certain areas therefore using specific vocabulary connected with their areas and then they can be misunderstood by the surrounding people.
COMMUNICATION BARRIERSCHARACTERISTICS OF SURROUNDING
• Noises - (factors which disturb passing the message from sender to recipient).
• Background (context) (consituation). Can you imagine that you make wrong assumptions just because of the fact that you wrongly understand some signals accompanying a certain situation?
COMMUNICATION PUZZLES
Whether the recipient understands us depends less on ‘WHAT’ we say (verbal channel) but more on ‘HOW’ we talk and behave (vocal and visual channel).
