Distance education is defined as a type of formal education that takes place when the instructor and student are separated physically by space and time.

Distance education or distance learning? Although most educators use distance
education and distance learning as same term but in fact DE is much wider concept than the distance learning. We can said that the distance education is the umbrella of different concepts such as distance learning, e-leaning etc. We can said that if there is distance education, there will be distance learners.

Distance education began with printed material. The first distance-delivered courses were offered by correspondence study, with print materials sent and returned to students by mail. While technological developments have added to the selection of tools available to the distance educator, print materials continues to be important.

History of distance education and technologyNowadays there are many new technologies used in distance education. One of them is the desktop videoconferences. This technology is a two-way interactive videoconference. Each distance learner can install a supported program (webcam, my space) and contact with his teacher and peers. Desktop videoconferences solve a lot of problem especially which is relate to interactive communication with peers and instructor.
