OutlineIntroductionWhat are Composites? Composite materials are materials made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties, that when combined, produce a material with characteristics different from the individual components.

An example of composites is

Concrete Concrete is a composite material composed mainly of water, aggregate, and cement.

Activity 1: Testing Different Types of IceObjective: Test the strength of three different samples of ice

Procedure: In this activity we tested the strength of three different samples of ice and this was by mixing different types of materials in the water. In sample (A) it was only water. Sample (B) included some tissues. And in Sample (C) we inserted many different types of materials such as paper, straws, and leaves.

Sample A took with us only one attempt and shattered into pieces.Sample B however, took several trails to break.

Sample C took more than 20 throws to break.

Conclusion: This proves that when we add materials to the water, it gives them more strength.

Activity 2 : Hunting For Composite Materials

Objective: Research the internet for different examples of composites.

Procedure:

Thanks to Al-Bairaq program, we also had to opportunity to know more about the composite materials. They taught us that the main material a composite is made of is called the MATRIX, meanwhile the other materials added are called CONSTITUENTS.

In this activity we were given some time to research the internet for different examples of composites

Results:

In this activity we were given some time to research the internet for different examples of composites.

Procedure: We were given five different types of materials to differentiate which were strong and which were flexible. The materials were a rope, a stick of wood, a stick of plastic, a stick of steel, and a peace of spaghetti.

Results: Flexibility 1) Rope 2) Plastic 3) Pasta 4) Wood 5) Steel Strength 1) Steel 2) Plastic 3) Wood 4) Pasta 5) Rope Activity 4: Testing a Foam Composite For Strength and Stiffness Objective: Test three different samples of foam A, B, and C.

Procedure: In this activity we tested three different samples of foam A, B, and C. In sample A we didnt add any enforcement on either of the sides. On sample B we added enforcement only on one side of the foam. Sample C had enforcement on both its face and back sides. Results:

Activity 5: Designing a Fishing PoleObjective: Based on what we learned from the activities we were supposed to design a fishing pole based on strength and flexibility concepts.

Helium Thermal Insulator

Project IdeaHelium Thermal Insulator

Introduction: Qatar is a beautiful country lying in the middle of a desert. One of the main sports in Qatar is football. And what an honor for Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup. But the temperature in Qatar gets really hot during the summer.

Objective: So our project idea is to cover the football stadiums of Qatar in an effective way that would allow us to keep the temperature low, benefit from the sunlight during the day, and be able to turn on the air conditions without worrying. Helium Thermal Insulator

Helium Thermal Insulator

Materials: Heat Insulator, Helium, Plastic.

Method: Knowing that Qatar is lead helium producer, which is a great advantage in the project. The first layer of the stadium cover is a transparent heat insulator, topped by a layer of helium gas that will lift the cover up. The last layer is made of plastic to contain the helium gas in between and provide extra insulation.

Helium Thermal Insulator

Results and Benefits:

After combining the three materials together we were able to create an eco-friendly transparent, heat insulator roof.

With this roof we can save electricity during the day because the sunlight is going to pass. We can also allow the air condition to be active during the summer.

Recommendations

We believe that if our project is put under consideration, it could help solve a problem in the country. We hope to see our roof in our stadiums not only for the world cup, but for the Qatari cups as well.

AcknowledgmentMany thanks to my teachers, school and AL-Bairaq team from Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), Qatar University for supporting us during our journey with AL-Bairaq.

Also, We would like to thank Al-Bairaq Partners UNESCO and Qatar National Commission . Also the sponsors RasGas, Maersk and Shell.
