PurchasingEnvironmentally Preferable Purchasing(EPP)
•Anvil gives preference to environmentally friendlyproducts whose quality, function, and cost are equalor superior to more traditional products.•Anvil is committed to actions designed to conservenatural resources and protect the environment, andwill continue to implement those actions wheneverpossible and economically feasible.•Anvil favors suppliers that provide environmentallyfriendly products, systems, technology and servicesor suppliers that are environmentally sensitive intheir daily operations or have establishedenvironmental management programs as well.
What is an environmentally preferable product?A product that has a lesseror reduced negative effect on human health and the environment when compared to competing products thatserve the same purpose(this comparison mayconsider raw materials acquisition, production, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, reuse, operation, maintenance, and disposal of the product)
Product Development and Raw Materials
• Designing sustainability into a product from inception can lead to both product innovation and cost savings
• By conducting product life cycle assessments, you can evaluate opportunities for savings
• Do you know where do your raw materials come from? Why is this recommended? – Risk assessment– Suppliers that care about their product’s integrity are more likely to care about
quality, delivery times, etc.
Product Life Cycle Comparison
Anvil Sustainable ManufacturingAnvil’s Textile Plant (recently WRAPe certified) represents the largest source of our emissions
Why does this matter? Carbon = Energy = Cost
What have we done about it?•Use Biomass boiler for steam generation•Use steam generated as by product from electrical cogeneration plant•Recover heat from waste water•Use low liquor ratio dye machines•Reuse cooling water from jets as process water•Recycle 80% of our solid waste•Modified dye processes to reduce water consumption•Modified dye processes to reduce temperature levels•Installed automatic moisture control on dryers to reduce steam consumption•Installed automatic shut off valves and pressure reducing valves on pads to lower water consumption
What are our results?•We have saved over $900,000 in savings per annum (conservatively)
Dyes, Chemicals, Sundry Suppliers
• Work with your suppliers to improve environmental profile of materials
• Review your processes for opportunities to reduce or reuse

Cut & Sew Operations
• Improve material utilization• Recycling saves money and eliminates
waste– printing cartridges– sewing needles– cutting knives– plastic thread cones– fabric waste– plastic bags– plastic wrap from fabric– cartons
• Conduct regular energy audits– Turn on/off A/C units 30 minutes after we
start and 30 minutes before we close
Packaging
