Product Development and Raw Materials

• Designing sustainability into a product from inception can lead to both product innovation and cost savings

• By conducting product life cycle assessments, you can evaluate opportunities for savings

• Do you know where do your raw materials come from? Why is this recommended? – Risk assessment– Suppliers that care about their product’s integrity are more likely to care about

quality, delivery times, etc.

Anvil Sustainable ManufacturingAnvil’s Textile Plant (recently WRAPe certified) represents the largest source of our emissions

Why does this matter? Carbon = Energy = Cost

What have we done about it?•Use Biomass boiler for steam generation•Use steam generated as by product from electrical cogeneration plant•Recover heat from waste water•Use low liquor ratio dye machines•Reuse cooling water from jets as process water•Recycle 80% of our solid waste•Modified dye processes to reduce water consumption•Modified dye processes to reduce temperature levels•Installed automatic moisture control on dryers to reduce steam consumption•Installed automatic shut off valves and pressure reducing valves on pads to lower water consumption

What are our results?•We have saved over $900,000 in savings per annum (conservatively)
