CONVENTIONS OF MOVIE TRAILERS

Page 2: Conventions of movie trailers

• The key aim of a trailer is to advertise the film in the trailer.

• A good trailer will attract the audience and make them want to see the full film.

• Trailers show the best scenes in films that will make the audience want to see more but not spoil the film for the audience.

TRAILER AGE WARNING• At the beginning of every film trailer there is a frame that shows who the intended audience of

the trailer is.

• There is either a trailer which has been approved for all audiences, or a trailer that has been created for an older audience.

• All audiences trailers are created so there is maximum advertisement for the film because everybody can view it.

• Red band trailers are created to show to an older audience. This is done because if they know what the true feeling of the film will be, they may be more inclined to see it.

• An example of a film with two different trailers is the Deadpooltrailer.

• There is an all ages trailer which everybody can view. Thistrailer contains toned down violence and no inappropriate language.

• The red band trailer features stronger violence and use of inappropriate language, meaning that younger people cannot view it.

INSTITUTION AND PRODUCTION• At the beginning of all film trailers, there is an introduction to

the institution releasing the film. Examples of institutions are:Warner Bros, Disney, Lionsgate.

• This is done so that the audience know who is associated with the film. This may also attract fans of that particular institution to watch the trailer and in turn go and see the film.

• Along with institutions, production companies also appear near the start of the trailer. These are the companies that pay for the film and organise costs.

• Again, fans of a particular production company, may go and see the film due to that company being involved.

FILM CLIPS• A trailer will show clips in the film in a sort of montage.

• Clips from the film will be edited into the trailer to show the audience a brief overview of the films plots, without spoiling the film for the audience.

• The trailer will show the best parts of the film to entertain people and therefore make them want to watch the full film.

• An example of a film trailer that showed the better parts of the film was Ted.

• The ted trailer showed the funnier moments to attract the audience to go and see the film.

TITLE• Every film trailer will need to include the title of the film somewhere.

• This is the key way of advertising the film in the trailer. If the audience didn’t know the name of the film they would not be able to see it.

• The name of the film is normally shown at two points in the trailer. It will be shown at the beginning or the end of the trailer.

• More recent trailers appear to show the movies title near the end of the trailer.

SOUND• Many trailers feature non-diegetic voice overs at the beginning of the trailer.

• This will normally be a line spoken during the film and will be heard over clips from the film.

• The voice over either features throughout the whole trailer, or will catch up to a scene and then have music in the background along with short phrases that are included in the film.

• The music that will be heard in the background of a trailer will appropriate to the genre of film being advertised. E.g. Action Film – Rock, Family Film – Pop, Romance Film - Love

TEXT FRAMES• In some trailers, text will appear throughout and “narrate” the trailer, giving an overview of

the characters or the themes of the film.

• At the end of every film trailer, there are a few frames that show information regarding the film.

• The information displayed on these frames will be information regarding the creation of the film.

• This information varies from actors in the film, to the production companies involved to websites advertising the film.

• The normally all appear separately on different frames and then collectively appear together at the end of the trailer.
