Corrosion is reduction-oxidation reaction

between a metal with other compound present

in the environment (such as water and air)

which produce undesirable compounds.

We know it as formation of rust.

Metal rust generally in the form of oxides or

carbonates.

Page 7: Corrosion

When iron submerged or in contact with an

electrolyte such as sea water or dew, in the area

of anode, Fe(s) Fe2+(aq) + 2e–

In the cathode, when electron loose in the

electrolyte, then break down into positive and

negative ions, forming O2(g) + 2 H2O(l) + 4e–

4 OH–(l)

Because a cycle then the Hydroxyl ions (OH-)

back to the anode through electrolyte carries

electron.

Iron ion(II) which formed in the anode will be

oxidized to form iron (III) which then form

hydrates oxides compound Fe2O3·xH2O called

rust.

Preventing of corrosion in iron can be done

by these following methods:

a. Coating iron with paint

b. Chromium plating

c. Tin plating

d. Galvanization

e. Sacrificial Anode
