COSTUME ANALYSIS INDIE ROCK

Page 2: Costume Analysis

In this image of the band Paramore we see each of the members wearing a dark shirt with a matching pair of dark jeans. This represents the rebellious and dark theme of Indie Rock music. It also shows the edgy, yet casual side to their personalities as they are wearing clothes that seem quite normal as they could wear them everyday.

They all look slightly similar in what they are wearing so you can tell they are together as a group but little parts of their style shine through to show their individuality. Such as the fact that Hayley, being the only girl in the group stands out already but she is wearing an almost see-through top with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows. This makes her still look girly whilst maintaining the Indie Rock star image.

This is different to Jeremy who is wearing an almost turtleneck looking printed shirt and black jeans. However, his look is seen as more quirky and outgoing as he wears various tight bracelets on either of his arms and he has a chain attached to his jeans. This shows his personality as weird and more quirky compared to the other two.

Lastly, Taylor’s costume make him seem really casual and as if he didn’t really care about what he was wearing as he wears a simple plain, grey t-shirt paired with some jeans. This could reflect his laid-back, carefree attitude and might be seen in the music.

In this image of the artist Florence Welch from the band ‘Florence and the machine’ and we see her wearing a dark red hat, a long designed waistcoat over a long sleeved flowy white top and dark red trousers. This represents the alternative/indie side of the Indie Rock genre. It also shows the calming and naturalistic side of her personality.

Her choice of costume would not be seen as a modern style and it seems like an outdated sort of look; this could imply that her music sounds soulful and old fashioned. Her costume seems quite outdated because it isn’t what typical modern artists wear but it would have been some time ago. Also the fact that she is wearing a hat and is very covered up could make it seem like she spends a lot of time outdoors.

Plus, the fact that she is wearing brighter colours indicates that her music would probably be lighter and happier than other Indie Rock types of music. This is also indicated by her light pink make-up and her bright red hair.

In this image of the band Of Monsters and Men we see each of the members wearing dark coloured costumes but with added features to show off their individual personalities (e.g. bow ties, patterned tights, etc). This represents the alternative, quirky side to the Indie Rock genre and of their personalities.

This is shown as Nanna is wearing a black hat, black shirt, with patterned tights and boots. She is also wearing many pieces of jewellery such as necklaces, bracelets and rings. This shows off her strange and unexpected personality as this differs from other Indie Rock artists slightly. Her wild and unruly curly hair also continues this idea. This could also be shown more in their music.

Next to her, Arnan follows this trend as he is wearing a jumper with the sleeves rolled up with dungaree-style straps over the top paired with some sunglasses, a bow tie and tight, dark blue trousers; whereas Ragnar wears a smart looking waistcoat over a plain shirt and loose scarf paired with some grey jeans.

All of these styles of costume continue the weird and quirky star image of the band. However, their choices of costume could also be seen as modern and up to date so that they can relate to their target audience and help to draw them in.
