• Covalent bond– Atoms held together by sharing electrons

• Molecule– A neutral group of atoms joined together

by covalent bonds

• Diatomic molecule– A molecule consisting of two atoms of the

same element– H2, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, I2

nonmetal and a metalloid

• Properties of molecular compounds– Relatively lower melting and boiling

points than ionic compounds–Many are gases or liquids at room

temperature– Do not conduct electricity
