QUESTION #1How can I help mydaughter focus whenshe is doing herhomework? 5. ANSWER#1Create a quiet, personal homeworkspace The space should also be used forbrain breaks Use a visual timer 6. QUESTION #2What do I do if my childhas an attitude towardshomework? 7. ANSWER#2Talk about the importance ofhomework with your child Let the teacher explain whyhomework is importantCreate a simple reward systemafter a short time (i.e. 1 or 2 weeks) 8. QUESTION #3My daughter does homeworkgreat with me, but when she doesit with dad, my daughter likes toargue about whats right andwhats wrong. How can I breakthis? 9. ANSWER#3 Ask your child why they push backwith you Find a subject that you can helpthem inGet help from someone else in theother subjects 10. QUESTION #4What do I do whenmy child wants me todo homework forthem? 11. ANSWER#4Encourage your child to try it forthemselves firstSkip the problem if they havetrouble with one particularproblemTry the first problem with them ifthey seem to be skipping everyproblem 12. ANSWER#4 Insert grit into your child (i.e.) I can do this, and even if I try and itswrong, its okay. Put a time limit on how long yourchild is struggling with a problembefore you comfort and help them If your child gives up on all of it, gothrough one problem with your childand see how it goes 13. QUESTION #5My child likes to negotiatewith me when it comes todoing homework.For example, I will do my homework if you give meDippin Dots. 14. ANSWER#5 Start to phase the rewards outslowly Push the rewards back even furthereach time instead of every timethey do homework (i.e. 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, a special day eachmonth) Give a caveat of whats to comewhen using rewards 15. QUESTION #6How do I break my childfrom wanting me to sitwith them while they dotheir homework? 16. ANSWER#6Build it into your routineTry sitting by your child, insteadof with themSet a time (i.e. Do a brain break together) 17. ANSWER#6Reassure your child: You are there if they need you Sit with them for a bit, if needed Let them know youll be back to check on them Lift their spirits by letting your childknow they can do it Let your child decompress beforedoing homework (i.e. have them draw, etc. before starting) 18. QUESTION #7Is it possible to keep a consistentroutine if my family has a crazyschedule where we get home atdifferent times each day.For example: Monday 3:30, Tuesday 6:00 Wednesday7:30 19. ANSWER#7 Just keep what your child doesconsistentDont worry about the times notbeing consistent Stay on a consistent routine Come home Have a snack Do homework 20. QUESTION #8What to do when my 5thgrade child does notwant my help, but needsit. 21. ANSWER#8 See if you child wants a tutor Start a mini study group with theirpeers, but specify there are rules Join an after-school program wherethere are high school and collegestudents that come in and help 22. QUESTION #9My child gets frustratedwhen it comes to homeworktime because the childthinks it is boring. 23. ANSWER#9Homework is boring to your childbecause it is not challenging: Go to the teacher Let the teacher know the work is not up to pace withwhat your child can do Ask if other homework can be assigned 24. ANSWER#9Homework is boring to yourchild because they are strugglingand get frustrated with it: Let the teacher know that your childneeds modifications in theirhomework because they dontunderstand it 25. ANSWER#9 Make homework fun for your child Play games (i.e. have a speed race with mathproblems to see if your child can beat your fastesttime) Make them comfortable in their own environment Explain to them that homework is boring, but ithas to be completed because it is a part of life (i.e. Let them know that sometimes you dont wantto do a task for work, but you have to.) 26. QUESTION #10I have to bribe my childto do homework. Howcan I break this habit? 27. ANSWER#10 Seek out a role model: Get a professional to help with homework(depending on how old your child is) For younger children: Do not get a tutor or an academic coach Try a high school or college studentTry another avenue instead ofbribery 28. ANSWER#10 Have your child use collective effortwith a classmate or sibling toencourage a small reward The reward can be given in a month or so An example of collective effort is, Remember, weall get to do something at the end! 29.
