Creating slides for the lobby screens
How to create slides that look good
AND get the message across
What are the screens for?
• Promoting the libraries and library services
• Informing patrons about new (or old)
resources, services, facilities
• Publicizing library-related events
• Other – just ask, who knows? (but it really isn’t
for personal stuff, ie. Happy Birthdays, etc.)
Basics
• Notice the shape of this slide: 16 x 9 inches
– This is the shape of the widescreen TVs – create
your slides at this aspect ratio to avoid this:
To do this
• Go to the "Design" tab
• Click "Page Setup"
• Select "Slides sized for On-
screen show (16:9)" and
then click ok.
• Create and save your slides
at this setting.
Images
• GET THE LARGEST IMAGE FILE YOU CAN FIND,
AND THEN SHRINK IT – OTHERWISE:
Poor Patrick!Blurry images are no fun.
Spongebob is much happier
How to get big images from the web
• This is one option – and note that I am
considering this fair use. Please don’t violate
copyright law in the library lobby!
Google Image Search
How to get big images of book covers
• Minerva – there are two sizes available here!
If Minerva fails (usually happens with older books), try Amazon
Small: And Large:
Fonts
• Use readable fonts
• Beware of script-like fonts – they look cool, but…what does this say?
•Fancy fonts are ok, as long as they fit the tone of the slide
This seems appropriate:
On July 21st, the Provost will be giving a lecture
on the challenges of managing a large
university.
Come to Library Palooza, hear some tunes, win a flash drive, and get
some great information while you’re at it!
This, however…

Animations, Movies, and more!
It is possible to create animations with
Powerpoint itself
But Try
Notto
overdoit
You can insert movie clips if you want…
Check with the IMC staff to see what’s possible
Try to keep the file sizes as small as you can
The sound is muted on the TVs - images should
explain themselves
Last grey slide
Q: What, besides the grey background, do most of
the preceding slides have in common?
A: Not much text!
