CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT

By Natalina Moore

GAME DESIGNER

Game Designers make the games. They do what the

name says; they design and create the game, how it

plays, and all the core elements and components of the a

game such as: its setting; structure; rules; story flow;

characters; the objects, props, vehicles, and devices

available to the characters; interface design; and modes

of play. They program all of this so they make the game

to their wish.

HIRONOBU SAKAGUCHI

Hiromobu Sakahuichi is a great example for a

game designer. He was born in 1962 and is also a

video game director and producer as well as being a

game designer. He is the creator of the Final Fantasy

series and and there are 15 in the series now, he

worked on the Final Fantasy series until number 5

when he left in 2004 to start his own game studio

called Mistwalker which produce role playing games

LEVEL EDITOR

The Level Editor creates the interactive architecture for

a segment of a game, this means they create the

environment for a level of a game, including the landscape,

building and objects. They have to keep to the overall

design specifications set by the game designers. So they

have to keep in mind the characters and story elements

created by the game designer, however they usually have

room to vary the look if they think that it will work well.

 LEAD ARTIST

The lead artist is responsible for the overall look of

the game, working with the game designers and the

leady programmers, the lead artist creates the game

visual style and directs the productions of all visual

material throughout the game.

TETSUYA NOMURA

For the game Final Fantasy 7 was originally the

character designer but as the lead artist was busy on

another project Tetsuya took over as the main artist.

He has worked on the previous Final Fantasy's too,

first as a monster designer.

TECHNICAL ARTIST

Technical Artists are the essential glue between the

artists and the programmers working on the game.

They ensure that art assets can be easily integrated

into the game without losing the overall artistic look

or being too difficult to put it to them game such as

having too many polygons or pixels and therefore

exceeding the technical limits of the chosen platform.

ERIK LINDQVIST

Erik is currently the Senior Technical Artist at

Avalanche studios, and was the Technical Artist at

Black Rock Studio, and was the Lead Technical Artist

at Grin which produced fortress which was a game

that was going to be similar to final fantasy but

Square Enix cancelled funding causing Grin to go

bankrupt.

ARTIST

Artists create and design the visual elements of a

game, such as the scenery, characters, objects,

surface textures, vehicles, props, clothing and the

user interface components. Artists also create the

concept art and story boards.

YUSUKE NAORA

Yusuke Naora is one of the artist that works for

Square Enix and has worked on various titles for

Final Fantasy as well as The Last Remnant and Code

Age Comanders

ANIMATOR

Animators animate movement. They are

responsible for the portrayal movement and

behaviour. They give life to game characters and

creatures but sometimes it can be objects or scenery

or environmental effects that the animators give life

to.

AUDIO ENGINEER

The Audio Engineer creates the soundtrack for the

game, this includes all the music; sound effects to

support the game action such as gunshots or

explosions; character voices and other vocal

expressions, spoken instructions and lastly ambient

effects such as crowd noise, vehicles or rain

NOBUO UEMATSU

Nobuo joined Square in 1986, before he left in

2004 he composed the soundtrack for over 30 square

games. He founded Smile Please. Ltd in 2004 and

still composes video game music as well as live

performances of his work.
