Hong Kong Hong Kong has long been an economic hub and financial center, as well as a gateway and bridge to China. When the British handed Hong Kong over to the Chinese in 1997, it became a special administrative region of China, enjoying more autonomy than most of China.
Hong Kong is where we arrive and depart, and in this way it serves us as our entry into Cantoneese culture and business in the region.

Guangzhou was one of the first Chinese cities to open up to outside investment in the early 1980’s. It emerged as the financial center for the Industrial boom in the Guangdong province, just north of Hong Kong and Macau. Today Guangzhou remains a financial hub of the region, and an important center for trade . In Guangzhou you will visit a variety of companies and meet with many professionals who will help us understand business in this area of the world, as well as the changes which rapid economic growth have brought.

Macau

A Portuguese colony and outpost until 1999, Macau has long been known for its casinos, and Its Casinos are the center of its economy. Surpassing Las Vegas in revenue in 2007, Macau’s Annual revenue from gaming amounts to over $36 Billion annually. The vast majority of the Casino customers come from China. Guangzhou is a 2 hour train-ride, and Hong Kong is a Short ferry ride away.

In this class we will meet with business and community leaders in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Macau, to understand the business environment and the impact of business on society. The focus will be on business– how business is conducted, business culture, avenues of entry, and current business trends. Students will become more knowledgeable of cross-cultural business practices, and will make contacts enabling them to actually conduct business in China.
