History

The history of honey dates back to ancient times, when it played a significant role in the daily diet. The ancient Greeks believed that the gods of Mount Olympus were fed with honey - the nectar of the gods.

According to Greek mythology, Zeus was raised on honey by the nymph Melissa in Diktaio Andro cave, and the ancient Greeks offered honey to the gods at sacrificial ceremonies.

During the Byzantine Empire, honey was part of the diet, especially in monasteries.

Nowadays, the world renowned Mediterranean diet, and especially the Cretan Diet, which provides Cretans with health and longevity, includes honey as the main sweetener.

The symbolic meaning of honey is equally important as it has been considered a symbol of fertility and welfare from ancient times until now.
