Cultural Masks Throughout History Name: ____________________________________________________________________ Block:________________ Sculpture I Duckworth Many civilizations use masks to create new identities within rituals, initiations or celebrations. Masks have been traced to the Paleolithic period. One of the most remarkable masks still in existence is more than 9000 years old. Other uses for masks include: Disguise and deception To scare away evil spirits or invoke the power of the spirit world Representing admired animals, taking on their desired attributes Protective roles to those that wear them Entertainment Communication with spirits Theater and dance Your Task: You will investigate, research and create a 3-slide presentation on masks from a chosen culture. You will then plan and create your own mask based on your cultural research. Part I: Research and Presentation 1) To get you started, use the resource sites on the following page, as well as books, to research a variety of cultures where masks are prominent. 2) Once you have researched each culture, choose an area and a culture to explore further 3) Complete the “Cultural Mask Research Organizer” worksheet. This is the basis of the information you will present. Also collect several images to use in your presentation. 4) Compile your researched information and images on the Google Slides template that was shared with you via email. 5) Open the template, make a copy and rename it as “YourLastName-YourCulture”. 6) In the new template add your own details and images. Be sure your presentation is at least 3 slides and contains all the information you gathered. 7) When complete, please share the file with your teacher. 8) Once presentations are complete, you will share your slides and a brief reflection with the class Part II: Your Mask Plan Using inspiration from the class presentations, plus any of your own ideas or personal creative responses, you will sketch at least 3 different ideas for your own mask, then do a final color drawing. Be sure it is reflective of one culture studied… it may not be your original direction Think about the shape – how much of your face will it cover, what could you add on, etc. List materials that might be needed to execute your plan Be sure you have several photographic references to help with your plan Part III: The Creation of Your Mask The base of your mask will be created from Plaster Tape. You have 2 choices: 1) Work with a partner and use your face to form the base of your mask. This will fit your face perfectly, and is a safe process if you follow the steps demonstrated. 2) Use a face form. This will not fit your face the same, but will still end in good results. Lastly, you will build on to, paint, and embellish your mask in any way that fits into your idea.
