Cited Reference Searches

When you are carrying out research it is essential to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in your subject area. Using our electronic current awareness services to create automatic alerts can save you much time and effort.
Types of alerts:
Journal Table of ContentsSaved Keyword SearchesCited Reference Searches
Journal Table of Contents
Identify journals relevant to your research and receive an email alert when a new issue is published. Most electronic journal publishers provide this service and make it available to non-subscribers as well as subscribers. If we subscribe to the journal you will be able to link straight to the full-text article.
Publishers providing this service include: Blackwell Synergy, Emerald, IngentaConnect, ScienceDirect, Wiley Interscience and many others.
Creating an alert
Look out for a link to “Alerts” on the publisher’s website. You will need to register with the publisher to create your alert and then follow the online instructions. NB This will not give you full-text access to a journal if NTU do not have an institutional subscription.
Saved Keyword Searches
Save your searches when using our electronic resources and receive an email alert when new content containing your chosen keywords is published. Most databases offer this service and if we subscribe to the journal you will be able to link straight to the full-text.
Databases which offer this service include: Land, Life and Leisure, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science and ISI Proceedings
Creating an alert
You will need to register with the database and sign in with these details (not your Athens username and password) to create alerts. Conduct your search and look out for links to “Save Searches” or go to “Search History” and follow the online instructions.
NB This will not give you full-text access to a journal if NTU do not have an institutional subscription. Cited Reference Searches
Current Awareness Services
Identify individual journal articles and receive an alert whenever these articles are cited by another journal article.
Databases providing this service include: ScienceDirect and Web of Science

You will need to register with the database and sign in with these details (not your Athens username and password) to create alerts. Conduct your search and click on an article that interests you. Look out for links to “Create a Citation Alert” and follow the online instructions.
Zetoc
The British Library’s Zetoc service is the most comprehensive electronic current awareness service. It indexes the contents of approximately 20,000 current journals and 16,000 conferences, both UK and international and across nearly every subject area.
Zetoc provides Journal Table of Contents and Keyword Search Alerts. It does not include abstracts but will link to NTU’s print and electronic holdings.
You only need your Athens username and password to create alerts. No registration is required.
eSearch
It is possible to create search alerts using eSearch. Perform a metasearch, then view “previous searches”. Click save your search and then go to “My eSearch” and “history”. Click to create your email alert.
RSS Feeds
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, or Rich Site Summary. RSS feeds allow you to see when new content is added to a website, including online journals and blogs. Most publishers now offer RSS feeds as an alternative to email alerts. Benefits include not having to register separately at numerous sites and being able to look at your feeds whenever you like.
To read RSS content, you will need to subscribe to an RSS reader. There are a number of different ones available, such as:

To subscribe to an RSS feeds, look out for one of these icons , or . Click on the icon, copy the Shortcut (or Link Location) and paste it into your RSS reader.
