Throughout this week we are going to visit some companies, museums and instituitions in

Serra da Estrela region. As a visitor, we invite you to use one of the tools for identifying

strengths and weaknesses on these companies / business. In this daily bulletin it follows a

summary of SWOT analysis and we would like you to do a Swot Analysis for each com-

pany / instituition you visit. See final pages.

WORK TO DO

Page 6: Daily Bulletin

Today´s organizations find themselves operating in a environment that is changing faster

than ever before. The process of analyzing the implications of these changes and modifying

the way that the organization reacts then it is known as business strategy. SWOT analysis

is a technique that you can perform for products, services, and markets when deciding on

the best strategy for achieving future growth.

The process involves identifying the strenghts and weaknesses of the organisation, and

opportunities and threats presented in the market that it operates in. The first letter of each

of these four words creates the acronym SWOT.

What is the SWOT analysis?

Areas you do well or

advantages of your

organization

External factors that may

contribute to your orga-

nization and can build up

your strengths

Areas to be improved

Potential problems / risks

caused by external fac-

tors that your organiza-

tion may face

We can make a SWOT analysis through a diagram in which we relate internal and external

factors as helpful or harmful in achieving the goals of the company. Strengths and weaknes-

ses are considered to be internal factors over which you have some measure of control.

Opportunities and threats are considered to be external factors over which you have no

control.

For example, if your organization

was dependent on one single large

distributor then this could

be seen as a strength, as you would

be able to get your products into

market quickly and efficiently.

However, it could be seen as a

weakness because you are totally

dependent on them to do so. Ano-

ther exemple is a large number of

distributors could be a strength if

your objective is to place your pro-

ducts in as many outlets as possi-

ble. But it could be a weakness if

your objective was to control your

retail prices and prevent discouting.
