Type of documentaryThis is an example of a mixed
documentary.
ThemesThere are many themes shown
throughout the documentary; murder, crime, change, respect and ‘the devil’.
Narrative Structure
This documentary is open as we get to know one of Britain’s deadliest men, Stephan French known as ‘the devil’, however after the documentary we do not see how Stephan’s gun campaign works out.
This is a single-strand film as it only follows French around as he shows us things from the past and present.
Deadliest men is a non-linear production as it is going back into the past as going over events that have already taken place, showing archive material to back up the responses.
Camerawork
Two-shot: two shots are used throughout as it captures both Danny and Stephan French, showing both peoples body language emphasising how Danny is on edge and French appears to not be feared by anything.
Close ups: The shot gradually gets closer and closer to Danny’s face to highlight his attitude towards what's about to be shown.
The camera follows Danny and Stephan around so its close and more personal to the action.
Mise-en-scene
The park- Stephan takes Danny here so that they can be alone and there are no disturbances to have a serious conversation linking to Stephan’s situation.
Stephan’s car- as they are driving round in his car rather than Danny's or even a taxi it shows that Stephan likes to be in control and always be wary of the situation.
Walking in the street a lot as they walk around Liverpool Stephan can show Danny where certain events took place e.g. a robbery.
The gym-Stephan introduces Danny to people who can give second opinions on what Stephan's reputation is. Coming the stories Danny has heard.
Home-Stephan gives Danny a real in sight on what its like to be on the other side of his raft.
Graveyard-Stephan tells us about what changed. The death of his rather started his anti-gun campaign.
Archive material
Throughout the documentary it shows imagery from the past of Stephan to put what he is saying into further content to widen the viewers thoughts. There are images showing his children and other family members/friends as they are not aired in the documentary, it gives a visual image when Stephan is talking about them.
