BUCKINGHAM’S THEORIES… Buckingham believed that genre is not always a

constant as it isn’t given by culture. This is because it is in a constant state of change.

As a result of this he believes that children and youths are been hidden away from reality due to the social leaders in front of them which are for example the parents who are trying to protect them. Due to being hidden away from reality the youths are open to the primary sources of media which are television, radio and computers. These are the places where information about how the world is constantly changing is coming from. The changes are being sourced through opinions, different views and cultural differences.

Buckingham has managed to understand that even though genres change overtime, conventions stay the same.

HOW DO HIS ARGUMENTS EFFECT MEDIA STUDENTS? Genre not being constant is going to cause problems for

media students as a large part of their work is seeing how well productions such as film and T.V fit in with a supposed genre. If this is constantly changing it makes it more difficult for them study as the boundaries of the different genres and what fits with in each one means it will be difficult to specify which genre they are in and if they are effective enough to come across as a certain singular genre.

By keeping youths away from reality means that they will be brought closer to media sources. This means that it will have positive effect on media students as they will have the chance to learn more about and understand how different media sources such as television and social media work. By having this opportunity it means that the students will know and will find it easier to research different areas and subjects as they will be able to break down the sources accurately and effectively as they will have a better understanding where to find certain bits of information.
