We will do all we can to help you and make sure you succeed.
But you must do your part.
And the first thing you must do:Understand why this might happen.
What do you need to do to succeed? What might cause good students not to succeed?
HONORS WANTS EVERY STUDENT TO SUCCEED
1. How much would you need to study each night, per class?
2. Why might the amount of studying be different for college versus high school?
3. How might the studying you do in college be qualitatively different than that in high school?
4. What is different about college that might success less likely?
5. What is different about college that might make success more likely?
6. What are some reasons that good students might do poorly?
YOUR ASSIGNMENT: EACH GROUP MUST ANSWER ONE OF THESE
QUESTIONS
Faculty responsibility: Inadequate feedback (students don’t know the grades
they’re earning until it’s too late)Expectations not high enough and not communicated
clearly This includes both the standards for success in class and how
much work is expected of the studentStudent responsibility:Too much free time, too many activities, lack of structure,
poor time managementThe shock of failure (the first time a straight-A student
earns a grade of C is devastating)Unwillingness to seek help (pride)Shared responsibility:Lack of engagement (students don’t feel like they belong)Poor choice of major
REASONS YOU’LL FIND IN PROFESSIONAL LITERATURE FOR
INADEQUATE SUCCESS
How
does an H
onors Student succeed?
In your groups: think of 3 resources, methods, or tools that you have as Honors Students that will ensure your success.
Homework: Learn to read a syllabus. Find the syllabus on Canvas. Read it through. Find the “Syllabus + Expectations” assignment on Canvas. It will ask you to submit
1-2 paragraphs in Canvas explaining what you expect to get out of this class.
1-2 paragraphs explaining what is expected of you in this class.
Be sure to differentiate these two writing assignments clearly in your submission.
