Conclusion—The arts are an important element of the curriculum.
Looking at last year’s high school seniors, the new data shows…
More arts classes = higher achievement on SAT and FCAT, and a greater likelihood of high school graduation.
Continue music and other arts programs. Because sequential courses are most effective, maintain
all levels-elementary, middle, and high. Allow time and access in the schedule.
In a letter sent this month to all school and education community leaders, the U. S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan made the following points:
The arts are core curriculum subjects. The arts play a significant role in children’s development and
learning process. Arts study can be especially important in improving learning
among economically disadvantaged students. Funding from Title I, Title II, Arts in Education grants, and
ARRA funds may be used to support arts education programs. This year the US DOE will conduct a survey to assess the
condition of arts education in grades K-12 to help practitioners and policymakers make more informed decisions about arts education.”

What we must do It is up to each of us to share this news with
the decision-makers in our respective schools, so that they are fully informed and able to make the best administrative choices for students.
Once that is accomplished, we can continue to do what we do best. That is to offer to our students the highest quality music education possible.
Remember: The greatest determining factor in our
students’ success is the TEACHER standing before them.
Have a positive and effective teaching year!
